Israel, Palestinians extend Gaza truce Posted: 18 Aug 2014 04:38 PM PDT Israel and the Palestinians agreed on Monday to extend a Gaza truce by another 24 hours, minutes before an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire was set to expire, officials on both sides said. Agreement was reached as gaps on key issues continued to dog efforts to achieve a long-term deal between Israel and militant groups in the Gaza Strip, dominated by Hamas Islamists, which would allow reconstruction aid to flow in after five weeks of fighting. The monthlong war ended in effect more than a week ago when Egypt brokered a three-day truce, which it then won agreement to extend by another five days through 2100 GMT on Monday. A Palestinian official close to the talks in Cairo said the latest extension would give both sides time "to complete the negotiations". |
Obama vows 'long-term' strategy against Islamic State Posted: 18 Aug 2014 02:08 PM PDT President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States has embarked on a long-term mission to defeat the insurgents of the so-called "Islamic State" fighting in Iraq. Ten days after ordering air strikes against the jihadist fighters, Obama warned that IS remains a threat to Iraq and the wider region, telling Baghdad "the wolf is at the door." Previously, Obama has been at pains to describe the US operation as limited but, as American jets pound IS positions outside Mosul, he said it would form part of a broader political strategy. |

Saudi prince carjacked in Paris, robbed of huge sum Posted: 18 Aug 2014 09:43 AM PDT Heavily armed robbers have mounted a brazen attack on the motorcade of a Saudi prince in Paris, making off with 250,000 euros in cash and stealing diplomatic papers, French police said Monday. The spectacular robbery took place in northern Paris late on Sunday as the motorcade was making its way from a plush hotel on the Champs Elysees to an airport in Le Bourget, said police, who confirmed there were no injuries. A police source and Le Parisien daily had said the men were armed with Kalashnikov rifles but an official later clarified to say they were carrying handguns. The Saudis' Mercedes and one of the thieves' BMWs were later found abandoned and burned out in the village of Saint-Mesmes, to the northeast of Paris, approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the scene of the crime. |

Israel, Palestinians extend Gaza truce by 24 hours Posted: 18 Aug 2014 04:48 PM PDT A new 24-hour ceasefire came into effect in the Gaza Strip Tuesday after Israeli and Palestinian negotiators agreed to extend a five-day truce, minutes before a midnight deadline, to allow for further talks on a long-term deal. News of the last-minute extension came from Cairo late Monday where Egyptian mediators have been pushing both sides to put a decisive end to weeks of bloodshed in Gaza, which has killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and 67 on the Israeli side. Israel also confirmed accepting the extension to allow talks on a longer-term deal to continue for another 24 hours. "In response to an Egyptian request, Israel agreed to extend the truce for 24 hours in order to continue the negotiations" for a more durable ceasefire, a government official said. |

Belgium international Courtois, 22, got the nod to start the season after returning to Stamford Bridge from a loan spell with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and helped Chelsea beat Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor in their opening game. Missouri governor lifts Ferguson curfew as National Guard called in Posted: 18 Aug 2014 04:37 PM PDT By Ellen Wulfhorst FERGUSON Mo. (Reuters) - Missouri Governor Jay Nixon lifted the curfew for the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson on Monday and began deploying National Guard troops to help quell days of rioting and looting spurred by the fatal shooting of a black unarmed teenager by a white policeman. Nixon, who had declared a state of emergency for the town on Saturday and ordered that the streets be cleared for a curfew that ran from midnight to 5 a.m., said the National Guard would fall under the supervision of the Missouri Highway Patrol. The deployment of the National Guard is the latest in a series of steps taken by authorities to end the looting and burning of stores that have punctuated protests since the shooting death of Michael Brown, 18, more than a week ago. |

Sprint cuts rates, CEO says more new plans to come Posted: 18 Aug 2014 04:18 PM PDT By Marina Lopes and Carey Gillam OVERLAND PARK Kan./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sprint Corp on Monday unveiled a new pricing plan that offers customers 20 gigabytes of data and up to 10 lines for $100, doubling its data offerings, the latest in a string of price cuts and promotions sweeping the wireless industry. Sprint's chairman, business tycoon Masayoshi Son, is betting new prices will revive a carrier hampered by an expensive network overhaul and rising competition. We are going to offer most competitive value for American consumers," Marcelo Claure, Sprint's newly appointed chief executive told Reuters in an interview. The move comes after Verizon slashed prices for its unlimited talk and text plan and T-Mobile expanded its family plan to 6 lines and could signal more price cuts ahead for the industry as a whole. |
No arrest for Gov. Perry but mug shot to be taken Posted: 18 Aug 2014 04:17 PM PDT AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas judge opted Monday not to issue an arrest warrant against Gov. Rick Perry, but the Republican still faces the unflattering prospect of being booked, fingerprinted and having his mug shot taken — and has assembled a team of high-powered attorneys to fight the two felony counts of abuse of power against him. |
Love thy neighbour, it's good for the heart: study Posted: 18 Aug 2014 04:13 PM PDT Well, there may be reason for concern, said researchers who reported a link Tuesday between having good neighbours and a healthier heart.
