U.S. judge says Uber drivers are not company's employees Posted: 12 Apr 2018 11:17 AM PDT U.S. District Judge Michael Baylson on Wednesday said San Francisco-based Uber does not exert enough control over drivers for its limo service, UberBLACK, to be considered their employer under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. The drivers work when they want to and are free to nap, run personal errands, or smoke cigarettes in between rides, Baylson said. |
Climate change runs AMOC with Atlantic currents: studies Posted: 11 Apr 2018 10:00 AM PDT A system of Atlantic Ocean currents that regulates global weather is at its feeblest in 1,600 years, weakened partly by climate change, said researchers Wednesday, warning of trouble ahead. Two studies in the journal Nature concluded the system, dubbed the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is in decline -- validating a long-held scientific suspicion. The weakening, agreed the teams, was the result of melting sea ice, glaciers, and ice-shelves gushing freshwater -- less dense than salty ocean water -- into the North Atlantic. |

Sweden charges Chinese with spying on Tibetan refugees Posted: 10 Apr 2018 05:44 PM PDT Swedish prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 49-year-old Chinese man with espionage for allegedly gathering intelligence on Tibetan refugees in Sweden and Norway for China. The man, identified in the charge sheet as Dorjee Gyantsan, is accused of infiltrating the Tibetan community to pass information on their personal and political activities to Chinese officials in exchange for money. Dorjee acquired resident status as a refugee in Sweden in the early 2000s, and posed as a supporter of Tibetan independence, prosecutors said. |

Pope acknowledges his 'grave mistakes' in Chile sex abuse crisis Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:27 PM PDT By Fabian Cambero and Philip Pullella SANTIAGO/VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis acknowledged on Wednesday that he had made "grave mistakes" in the handling of a sexual abuse crisis in Chile, saying he felt shame and inviting victims he had once doubted to Rome to seek their forgiveness personally. "I have made grave mistakes in the assessment and my perception of the situation, due in particular to a lack of truthful and balanced information," he wrote in an extraordinary letter to Chilean bishops. The letter followed a visit to Chile by one of the Vatican's most experienced sexual abuse investigators, Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta. |

Israel targets Hamas posts in Gaza after border blast Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:06 AM PDT The Israeli army said it fired at unspecified Hamas "military targets" in Gaza on Wednesday after a Palestinian bomb attack on an army engineering unit working inside the Hamas-ruled territory. It was not clear what the engineering unit was working on, though Israel routinely carries out maintenance work on or near the border fence in an area it considers a buffer zone. "During routine activity in northern Gaza, an explosive device that was placed under the guise of the riots was detonated against an (army) engineering vehicle on the western side of the security fence," a military statement said. |
Braced for air strikes on Syria, some airlines re-route flights Posted: 11 Apr 2018 07:56 AM PDT By Jamie Freed SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Some major airlines were re-routing flights on Wednesday after Europe's air traffic control agency warned aircraft flying in the eastern Mediterranean to exercise caution due to possible air strikes into Syria. Eurocontrol said in a notification published on Tuesday afternoon that air-to-ground and cruise missiles could be used over the following 72 hours and there was a possibility of intermittent disruption to radio navigation equipment. U.S. President Donald Trump and Western allies are discussing possible military action to punish Syria's President Bashar Assad for a suspected poison gas attack on Saturday on a rebel-held town that had long held out against government forces. |

Speaking at a ceremony at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, the Israeli premier spoke of the murderous Nazi aggression that was not sufficiently challenged by Western powers. "Today, too, there's an extremist regime that's threatening us, threatening the peace of the entire world," Netanyahu said of Iran. |

The spate of crashes began on March 14, when a Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter plunged into the sea near Naval Air Station Key West in Florida. On March 15, an Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopter struck the ground in western Iraq, killing all seven airmen aboard. |

Attorneys for Andrea Constand – a 44-year-old woman who says Mr Cosby sexually assaulted her in 2004 – plan to call a total of five alleged victims to the stand in this week's retrial. "It still takes me everything within my being to say the words, 'I was raped',' one of the witnesses, Janice Baker-Kinney, told the courtroom. |

Dawn clashes as French police clear anti-capitalist camp Posted: 11 Apr 2018 01:01 AM PDT Notre-Dame-des-Landes (France) (AFP) - Clashes broke out before dawn at an anti-capitalist camp in western France on Wednesday as police battled for a third day to clear activists who first set up the alternative commune a decade ago. Some 70 protesters were lobbing projectiles at police from behind barricades set up to defend the camp at Notre-Dames-des-Landes near the city of Nantes, met with volleys of tear gas and rubber grenades. Activists opposed to plans to build an airport first began squatting on the farmland in 2008 and it had since grown into a sprawling 1,600-hectare (4,000-acre) settlement billed as a utopian leftist farming community. |
