Link-up between Yemen and Syria Islamists of 'extreme concern': US Posted: 13 Jul 2014 01:22 PM PDT US Attorney General Eric Holder said on Sunday that intelligence suggesting Islamist bombmakers from Yemen have teamed up in Syria is "more frightening than anything" he had seen before. In an interview with ABC News, Holder called the alleged cooperation between expert bomb-makers in Yemen and jihadists fighting in Syria's civil war a "deadly combination." ABC News, citing unidentified sources, said US intelligence suspects Yemeni bombmakers in Syria have designed an explosive device small enough to fit in a laptop computer. |

Islamist militia attacks rivals at main Libya airport Posted: 13 Jul 2014 06:14 AM PDT Deadly clashes raged Sunday around Libya's main international airport, closing in down, as Islamist militia attacked liberal rivals in their Tripoli bastion, in an intensifying power struggle. Exchanges of fire with heavy weapons forced the closure of Tripoli airport, as foreign ministers from the North African nation's neighbours were to meet later in Tunisia to consider how to aid chaos-riddled Libya. The assault on the Zintan group by rival Islamist militants also came after the UN pulled staff from Libya citing security reasons, and as the United States warned of further escalation. An airport official said "rockets struck inside the airport perimeter around 6 am (0400 GMT)", followed by heavy clashes between the Zintan militia which controls the airport and rival gunmen. |

Israeli commandos clash with Hamas in Gaza raid Posted: 13 Jul 2014 03:52 PM PDT Israeli navy commandos clashed with Hamas gunmen during a raid on the coast of the Gaza Strip on Sunday, the first such gunfight of a six-day Israeli offensive on the territory aimed at stopping Palestinian rocket fire. The Israeli force was attacking a site in northern Gaza used to launch long-range rockets when it came under fire, a military statement said. Hamas said its fighters had fired at the Israeli force offshore, preventing them from landing. Israel says a ground invasion of Gaza remains an option, and it has already mobilized about 20,000 reservists to do so, but most attacks have so far been from the air, hitting some 1,200 targets in the territory. |

Israel, Hamas defy truce calls on Gaza bloodiest day Posted: 12 Jul 2014 04:28 PM PDT The world implored Israel and Hamas to end hostilities Saturday, but the violence escalated with the toll in Israeli strikes rising to 157 and Gaza militants firing more rocket salvos. Both sides have dismissed calls for a truce, and Israel continued to build up troops along the Gaza border ahead of a possible ground invasion, warning Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate their homes. With the Palestinian death toll at 157, and with no Israelis killed, the UN Security Council unanimously urged Israel and Hamas to respect "international humanitarian laws" and stop the loss of life. |
