Teachers should not be armed because most are women, Republican politician argues Posted: 16 Mar 2018 10:38 AM PDT A Republican politician argued teachers should not be armed in the wake of the Florida high school shooting - because most of them are women. Alabama state representative Harry Shiver claimed that women "are scared of guns" and don't want to learn how to shoot. Mr Shiver told AL.com he would probably abstain from voting on a bill that would allow trained teachers to carry guns on school campuses. |
'Doors off' chopper flights restricted after deadly NYC crash Posted: 16 Mar 2018 12:53 PM PDT U.S. authorities ordered an end on Friday to so-called "doors off" helicopter rides unless passengers are equipped with quick-release restraints, following a crash in New York City last week that killed five people. The agency said it also will conduct a "top to bottom review" of its rules governing such flights to examine any potential misapplication that could create safety gaps for passengers. The pilot survived but all five passengers were killed on Sunday evening when a Eurocopter AS350 plunged into New York City's East River while on a private "photo shoot" charter. |
Intensifying assaults in Syria spark dual evacuations Posted: 16 Mar 2018 11:06 PM PDT Syrian civilians in the last rebel-held pockets of besieged Eastern Ghouta have been urged to flee as Russia-backed regime forces storm into the beleaguered area near Damascus, with intense airstrikes killing dozens and causing thousands more to evacuate. Syria's war enters its eighth year with another deadly assault also unfolding in the north, where Turkish-led forces pressed an operation to seize the Kurdish-majority region of Afrin. The operation has sent thousands onto the roads, with bombing of the city of Afrin on Friday killing 43 civilians, a third of them killed in a deadly strike on a hospital. |

My Lai massacre photographer laments US 'carnage' fifty years on Posted: 16 Mar 2018 02:43 AM PDT Fifty years after taking photos of an American massacre of Vietnamese villagers, a former US army photographer said he is sorry for the "carnage" his countrymen unleashed in one the war's worst atrocities. Ronald Haeberle told AFP he started snapping instinctively, capturing the chilling photos that would later expose the full extent of the My Lai massacre: 504 Vietnamese dead in a single day, mostly unarmed women, children and older men. "I wanted to remember what was happening there, I wanted to capture a moment in time, and I did," he told AFP while touring the My Lai massacre museum in the village on Friday, the 50th anniversary of the killings. |

Indonesia pushes for Southeast Asian patrols of disputed waters Posted: 15 Mar 2018 09:46 PM PDT By Fergus Jensen SYDNEY (Reuters) - Indonesia has lobbied Southeast Asian countries to carry out maritime patrols in the disputed South China Sea, claimed in most part by China, to improve security, Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said on Friday. Indonesia says it's a non-claimant state in the South China Sea dispute but has clashed with China over fishing rights around the Natuna Islands and expanded its military presence there, and also renamed the northern reaches of its exclusive economic zone, asserting its own maritime claim. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defence Minister Marise Payne held talks with their Indonesian counterparts Retno Marsudi and Ryacudu in Sydney, ahead of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. |

Chief engineer Denney Pate left a voicemail on a Florida Department of Transportation employee's landline on March 13, two days before the pedestrian walkway came crashing down on the major road beneath, the department said in a statement. There was "some cracking that's been observed on the north end of the span," Pate said, according to a transcript of the call. |

As fighting rages, can Russia forge a peace in Syria? Posted: 16 Mar 2018 01:01 PM PDT Nearly two and a half years after the Russian military began an intensive bombing campaign in Syria in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russia is struggling to engineer a political solution in the war-ravaged country, analysts say. The Kremlin has presented its landmark Syria operation as a success, shrugging off western criticism over the killing of civilians while claiming to have withdrawn a significant part of its forces. "During the battle against the Islamic State group (IS), it was easier for the various parties (Russia, Turkey, Iran, US) to find common ground. |

Former Qualcomm chairman Jacobs to exit board of directors Posted: 16 Mar 2018 04:39 PM PDT The board decision comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump blocked a $117 billion hostile bid from Singapore-based rival Broadcom Ltd to acquire Qualcomm, citing national security concerns. Jacobs supported Qualcomm's resistance to Broadcom's bid, but he increasingly clashed with other members of the San Diego-based company's board, including Chief Executive Steve Mollenkopf, over how Qualcomm defended itself, according to people familiar with the matter. |
Audi to build four-door electric sports car in 2020 Posted: 16 Mar 2018 05:27 AM PDT Audi has just confirmed it will be launching a fully-electric four-door GT model in 2020 to rival the Tesla Model S, which will be a gran turismo sibling of the e-tron SUV that arrives later this year. At its recent annual press conference, the manufacturer announced it will launch no fewer than five of those models by as soon as 2021, so we will soon have a Q3-sized EV crossover, the e-tron, e-tron Sportback and the e-tron GT. Perhaps what's most interesting about Audi's conversion to the electric cause is a focus on what will be special "Audi Sport" performance models. |

He regularly visited the California Institute of Technology, where I work as a researcher. And, in perhaps my greatest contribution to world culture, I helped arrange Stephen's cameo appearance on The Big Bang Theory. |

Vietnam marks 50 years since U.S. massacre at My Lai Posted: 15 Mar 2018 10:14 PM PDT By James Pearson QUANG NGAI, Vietnam (Reuters) - Vietnam marked 50 years since the My Lai massacre on Friday in a memorial ceremony at the site of the killings that was attended by survivors of the massacre, their families, and around 60 U.S. Vietnam War veterans and anti-war activists. American soldiers killed 504 people on March 16, 1968, in Son My, a collection of hamlets between the central Vietnamese coast and a ridge of misty mountains, in an incident known in the West as the My Lai Massacre. "After peace was restored in the country, the people of Son My overcame pain with forgiveness and opened their arms to sincerely welcome U.S. veterans here as a place of pilgrimage, a place to face the truth, face themselves and find peace of mind in a receiving land," Dang Ngoc Dung, deputy chairman of the Quang Ngai Province People's Committee, said at the event. |
