U.S. clerk jailed for gay marriage defiance; dispute goes on Posted: 03 Sep 2015 03:33 PM PDT A Kentucky county clerk was jailed on Thursday for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, and a full day of court hearings failed to put an end to her two-month-old legal fight over a U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding same-sex marriage. U.S. District Judge David Bunning found Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis in contempt then elicited a pledge from five of her six deputies to issue the licenses. The 49-year-old woman, who has emerged as a darling of social conservatives, has refused to issue licenses to any couples, gay or straight, since the U.S. Supreme Court in June ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry under the U.S. Constitution, citing her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian. |
South Carolina to seek death penalty in Charleston church massacre Posted: 03 Sep 2015 01:55 PM PDT South Carolina will seek the death penalty for Dylann Roof, who is charged with the June murders of nine black worshippers at a Charleston church, a state prosecutor said on Thursday. The 21-year-old Roof, who is white, has been accused of gunning down his victims, members of a Bible study group at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church, because it was a nationally known historically black church. "This was the ultimate crime and justice from our state calls for the ultimate punishment," Ninth Judicial Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said at a news conference. |
Justice Department tightens cellphone tracking rules Posted: 03 Sep 2015 05:00 PM PDT By Julia Edwards WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors and some federal law enforcement agencies will need to obtain a search warrant to use devices that track cellphone locations, under a policy announced by the U.S. Justice Department on Thursday. Until now, U.S. attorneys and Justice Department agencies, including the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration, have been able to use cell-site simulators without applying for a warrant or outlining a probable cause. Cell-site simulators replicate phone towers to pick up location-identifying information that enables law enforcement to apprehend fugitives, conduct narcotic investigations or rescue a kidnapped child, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates told reporters on Thursday. |

Kentucky clerk unlikely star in fight against gay marriage Posted: 02 Sep 2015 06:05 PM PDT Fans of Kim Davis have rallied around the Kentucky clerk while foes have lined up in protest since she touted her religious beliefs in defiance of a court order to issue same-sex marriage licenses. From the overwhelmed florist in Morehead, Kentucky, delivering bouquets to her nearby office, to a fellow county clerk biking across the state to show solidarity, to a Republican presidential candidate calling hers a fight against tyranny, many are standing with her. This week the U.S. Supreme Court declined to grant Davis a stay on a federal judge's injunction that would force her to issue marriage licenses to all comers. |
