Police seek protesters who toppled Confederate statue in North Carolina Posted: 21 Aug 2018 11:41 AM PDT Protesters pulled the statue down with rope, cheering as it lay face down in the mud, its head and back covered in dirt. The university system's board chair, Harry Smith, and president, Margaret Spellings, denounced the toppling of the statue in a joint statement. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, said in a statement he shared protesters "frustration" over statues but condemned the violent destruction of public property. |

Venezuela rocked by strongest earthquake to hit country in 100 years Posted: 22 Aug 2018 12:15 AM PDT Venezuela has been hit by its strongest earthquake in more than 100 years, knocking out power and toppling supermarket shelves. Damage from the 7.3-magnitude quake, which shook the nation's northeastern coast and parts of the Caribbean, was limited by the depth of tremors beneath the Earth's surface. The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a depth of 76 miles (123km), with an epicentre a few miles off the Cariaco peninsula. |

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi urges followers to wage 'jihad' Posted: 22 Aug 2018 01:10 PM PDT Islamic state leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in his first purported speech in nearly a year, has called on followers to persevere, according to a statement posted on the group's media outlet. "For the Mujahideen (holy warriors) the scale of victory or defeat is not dependant on a city or town being stolen or subject to that who has aerial superiority, intercontinental missiles or smart bombs," Baghdadi said in a recording posted on his al-Furqan media group. Reuters was unable to verify whether the voice on the recording was Baghdadi's. Islamic State, which until last year controlled large areas in Syria and Iraq, has since been driven into the desert following successive defeats in separate offensives in both countries. Baghdadi, who declared himself ruler of all Muslims in 2014 after capturing Iraq's main northern city Mosul, is now believed to be hiding in the Iraqi-Syrian border region after losing all the cities and towns of his self-proclaimed caliphate. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi addressing Muslim worshippers at a mosque in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, in an image released in July 2014 The secretive Islamic State leader has frequently been reported killed or wounded since leading his fighters on a sweep through northern Iraq. His whereabouts are not known but Wednesday's message appears to suggest he is still alive. One of his sons was reported to have been killed in the city of Homs in Syria, the group's news channel reported earlier this year. Baghdadi's last message came in the form of an undated 46-minute audio recording, released via the al-Furqan organisation in September, where he urged followers across the world to wage attacks against the West and to keep fighting in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. |
China, El Salvador establish ties in fresh defeat for Taiwan Posted: 20 Aug 2018 10:45 PM PDT China and El Salvador established diplomatic relations Tuesday as the Central American nation ditched Taiwan in yet another victory for Beijing in its campaign to isolate the island. Beijing has been using its economic clout to peel away international support for the democratically-ruled island, leaving it with only 17 diplomatic allies around the world. Speaking in Beijing at the Diaoyutai Guest House, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised El Salvador's decision to "recognise there is one China in the world". |

Arctic’s strongest sea ice breaks up for first time Posted: 21 Aug 2018 08:58 AM PDT The thickest sea ice in the Arctic has started to break up, opening waters north of Greenland that are normally frozen, experts have warned. One meteorologist described the phenomenon - recorded for the first time this year - as "scary". Scientists said it could prove catastrophic for polar bears and seals, threatening their survival. The sea off the north coast of Greenland had long been known as "the last ice area" because it was expected to be the last place to remain frozen, given it had the oldest and thickest ice. Others said it could force scientists to revise their theories about which part of the Arctic will withstand global warming the longest. The sea off the north coast of Greenland had long been known as "the last ice area" because it was expected to be the last place to remain frozen, given it had the oldest and thickest ice. But now scientists are warning that the ice has broken up twice this year, due to warm winds and heatwaves in the northern hemisphere. The thick old sea ice will have been pushed away from the coast, to an area where it will melt more easilyThomas Lavergne, Norwegian Meteorological Institute The changes could force scientists to revise their theories about which part of the Arctic will withstand global warming the longest. Professor Peter Wadhams, who heads the Polar Ocean Physics Group at Cambridge University, said the trend would also have "serious" consequences for wildlife - and could prove catastrophic for polar bears and seals. "The north coast of Greenland, with its very steep cliffs, is a denning area for polar bears," Prof Wadhams said. "They dig holes in the snow and come out in the spring and go hunting. But if the pack ice has moved offshore they come out hibernation and are left without an area to hunt. "They can't swim very far. If this becomes a permanent feature with ice away from the coast, polar bears won't have any ice to hunt on. You would lose the polar bear habitat," he told The Independent. Ruth Mottram of the Danish Meteorological Institute said: "Almost all of the ice to the north of Greenland is quite shattered and broken up and therefore more mobile." "Open water off the north coast of Greenland is unusual. This area has often been called 'the last ice area' as it has been suggested that the last perennial sea ice in the Arctic will occur here. The events of the last week suggest that, actually, the last ice area may be further west." How fast is the Arctic ice melting? | Meet the British scientist who risked polar bear attacks and plagues of mosquitoes to find out Walt Meier, a senior research scientist at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, said: "The ice there has nowhere else to go so it piles up. On average, it's over four metres thick and can be piled up into ridges 20 metres thick or more. This thick, compacted ice is generally not easily moved around. "However, that was not the case this past winter (in February and March) and now. The ice is being pushed away from the coast by the winds." Thomas Lavergne, a scientist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, described satellite pictures of blue water penetrating white ice as "scary". Even if the water closes over in a few days, the harm will be done, he told The Guardian. "The thick old sea ice will have been pushed away from the coast, to an area where it will melt more easily." |

Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan wanted in Singapore for dodging military service Posted: 22 Aug 2018 06:03 AM PDT The author of the book "Crazy Rich Asians", which inspired the Hollywood hit film of the same title, is wanted in his home country of Singapore for defaulting on his military service, the defence ministry said on Wednesday. Kevin Kwan, author of the 2013 book and an executive producer of the film, was notably absent from the Singapore premier of the romantic comedy on Tuesday. The Ministry of Defence said Mr Kwan had failed to register for National Service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address, and he had also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. "Mr Kwan is therefore wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations," the ministry said in a statement. He was liable to a fine of up to S$10,000 ($7,315) "and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years upon conviction", the ministry said. Director John Chu and his wife Kristin Hodge pose for photographers as they arrive for the red carpet screening of the movie "Crazy Rich Asians" on Tuesday Credit: Don Wong/AP Mr Kwan could not be reached for comment. Singapore has a strict law on national service for all male citizens and enforces it with few exceptions. It makes it illegal for men to give up citizenship without having completed their military service, of about two years. Mr Kwan left Singapore at age 11, first moving to Texas with his family, and has lived in the United States since then, Singapore media said. His 1994 application to renounce his Singapore citizenship and a subsequent appeal had been rejected, the ministry said. Mr Kwan's book and the film directed by Jon M Chu depict Singapore as a playground for the super-rich in a story about an Asian-American woman who goes to the city state to meet her boyfriend's wealthy family. Mr Kwan himself comes from a prominent Singapore family. His great grandfather was a founding director of the Overseas-Chinese Banking Corporation - Singapore's oldest bank. |
US inmates launch nationwide strike Posted: 21 Aug 2018 09:15 AM PDT US prisoners on Tuesday declared a nationwide strike demanding changes to correctional institutions including living conditions, pathways to parole and voting rights restoration. The US incarceration rate is the world's highest: about 2.2 million people were behind bars at the end of 2016, a figure the American Civil Liberties Union says represents approximately one-fifth of the global population of prisoners. The strike -- set to continue through September 9, according to organizers -- was called in response to a deadly riot in April at a maximum security prison in South Carolina, Lee Correctional Institution. |

Jeremy Corbyn refuses to endorse tougher sanctions on Russia Posted: 21 Aug 2018 10:32 AM PDT Jeremy Corbyn has refused to endorse calls for the UK to follow the United States and impose tougher sanctions on Russia, describing it as a "huge player on the world stage". Speaking in New Lanark, Scotland, the Labour leader called for "serious dialogue" with Moscow. It came after Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, used his first speech in the US to call for the European Union to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with Washington over tougher sanctions on Russia. Mr Corbyn said: "I think what we need is a serious dialogue with Russia, put the megaphones down, pick up the phone and make the arrangements to have serious meetings with Russia. "Yes, there are huge human rights issues that have to be raised with Russia and Russia has to be challenged on them, but at the end of the day there has to be a relationship with Russia. We cannot just have a building up of tensions on both sides of the border." Asked if tougher sanctions should be put in place, Mr Corbyn said: "You have to realise you've got to live with Russia, you've got to negotiate with Russia, you have to be critical of Russia where they are wrong, but you also have to have that relationship. "After all, Russia is part of the Europe-wide economy, a major energy supplier and obviously a huge player on the world stage." Jeremy Corbyn Credit: Matt Dunham/AP The comments went against calls by Mr Hunt for the EU to take more decisive action against "aggressive and malign behaviour" by the Kremlin. The Foreign Secretary praised the Trump administration's support of the UK following the Salisbury poisoning, as well as its latest round of sanctions, which come into force on Wednesday. Mr Hunt said: "Of course we must engage with Moscow, but we must also be blunt: Russia's foreign policy under President Putin has made the world a more dangerous place. "Today the UK asks its allies to go further by calling on the European Union to ensure its sanctions against Russia are comprehensive, and that we truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the US. Jeremy Hunt Credit: SAUL LOEB/AFP "That means calling out and responding to transgressions with one voice wherever and whenever they occur, from the streets of Salisbury to the heart of Crimea." He later clarifies that his call for the EU to support the US "doesn't mean we will react in the same way as the US". Mr Hunt praised Donald Trump's administration and added: "There is no closer military alliance anywhere in the world than the UK and US." |
