Sean Spicer says a ‘small group of people’ know what Trump’s ‘covfefe’ tweet meant Posted: 31 May 2017 12:30 PM PDT According to White House press secretary Sean Spicer, the cryptic, now deleted tweet containing the word "covfefe" that President Trump sent in the wee hours of Wednesday morning actually meant something to a select group of people. "The president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant," Spicer said after Yahoo News asked about the tweet in a briefing with reporters on Wednesday. Spicer's answer prompted widespread laughter and incredulous questions from reporters. |

Dads' Brains React Differently to Sons and Daughters Posted: 01 Jun 2017 07:53 AM PDT Dads with toddler-age daughters interact differently with their kids than fathers with toddler-age sons, a new study suggests. In addition, their brains' responses to their tots' pictures differed from those of dads with sons, according to the findings, which were published May 22 in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience. The findings indicate that gender-based differences in fathers' behaviors appear to show up while children are very young, said lead study author Jennifer Mascaro, an assistant professor of family and preventive medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. |
Heavily armed men storm hotel and a casino resort in Philippine capital Posted: 01 Jun 2017 12:01 PM PDT Gunfire was reported at a hotel and a casino resort in the Philippine capital on Friday, the operator of the complex said, and the Islamic State group (IS) quickly claimed responsibility. "Resorts World Manila is currently on lockdown following reports of gunfire from unidentified men," the company said on its Twitter account. "The company is working closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that all guests and employees are safe." IS said "lonewolf soldiers" from its group carried out the attack, according to the SITE Intelligence Group that monitors terrorist organisations. |

Ohio sues five drug companies over opioid crisis Posted: 31 May 2017 11:19 AM PDT The state of Ohio on Wednesday sued five major drug manufacturers, accusing them of misrepresenting the risks of prescription opioid painkillers that have fueled a sky-rocketing drug addiction epidemic. The suit, filed by Attorney General Mike DeWine, comes as a growing number of state and local governments are suing drugmakers and distributors, seeking to hold them accountable for a deadly and costly opioid crisis. Opioid drugs, including prescription painkillers and heroin, killed more than 33,000 people in the United States in 2015, more than any year on record, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. |

The former Ukip politician has been drawn into the probe because of his relationships with Mr Trump's aides and Julian Assange, the Guardian reports. Being a "person of interest" in the ongoing probe does not infer wrongdoing, and is used to describe people who have information that can assist an investigation. |
Surprise, no one wants to be Ted Cruz's Secret Santa Posted: 01 Jun 2017 11:06 AM PDT Here's something that will probably not surprise you: nobody likes Ted Cruz. Al Franken's new book Giant of the Senate contains some great stories about the Texas senator who is like if Grandpa Munster started reading Ayn Rand. Turns out he's even despised by his fellow senators. A week or so ago, Franken revealed a particularly biting joke that actually managed to silence Ted, who he says has had it coming due to his insufferable and smarmy nature. SEE ALSO: You're wrong, media: There's plenty of diversity among the 13 white men working on healthcare .@alfranken, in Giant of the Senate, recounts @amyklobuchar pre-clearing a Ted Cruz joke she was going to tell at Gridiron with @tedcruz pic.twitter.com/xj3ox3hFqT — jonathantilove (@JTiloveTX) May 24, 2017 A mammoth burn. Dear God, Al. Ted Cruz, who looks like if a hastily made ventriloquist dummy came to life while watching The 700 Club, offered a rebuttal in the form of an insanely good "covfefe" tweet. Covfefe? Hard to say, but I hear Al Franken's new book is full of it ;) https://t.co/o6BSSUyKE4 — Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) May 31, 2017 Franken did a town hall conversation on Wednesday with The Hill Editor-in-Chief Bob Cusack and revealed something even funnier in regards to the senate's annual Secret Santa ritual: people apparently physically recoil when they pick out his name from the hat. "I've had people pick out Cruz's name and then drop it on the floor. I've actually had that happen," he explains. Which is an understandable response. Ted Cruz, who looks like the halfway point of Ronald Reagan animorphing into a blob fish, has yet to reply to this anecdote. But the Franken/Cruz rivalry is definitely one to watch if this is the quality of content we're in for. WATCH: Beachgoers should be wary of this deadly sea creature |

Apple WWDC 2017 Preview: A Siri Speaker Plus Software Posted: 31 May 2017 04:47 PM PDT WWDC tends to be a software-focused event, but Apple may be announcing several new devices at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5. There's a remote possibility we'll get a sneak peek of the iPhone 8, but based on recent reports, there's a much better chance we'll see a revamped a new Siri-powered speaker that will compete against Amazon's legion of Alexa speakers, a revamped 10.5-inch iPad Pro and an update to Apple's MacBook lineup. Apple CEO Tim Cook will kick off WWDC 2017 on June 5. |
N. Korea prepared for new ICBM test: state media Posted: 30 May 2017 11:12 PM PDT North Korea warned Wednesday it was prepared to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at any time, as the US successfully tested a system designed to intercept them. The fresh sabre-rattling from Pyongyang appeared to up the stakes as the Pentagon announced Tuesday it had intercepted a mock-up of an ICMB in a first-of-its-kind test. Concern among the international community over the North's weapons programme was further raised after North Korea test-fired yet another ballistic missile, the latest in a series of launches that have ratcheted up tensions over Pyongyang's quest to develop weapons capable of hitting the United States. |

Philippine friendly fire airstrikes kill 11 troops Posted: 01 Jun 2017 04:07 AM PDT Philippine airstrikes aimed at Islamist militants who are holding hostages as human shields killed 11 soldiers, authorities said Thursday, as they conceded hundreds of gunmen may have escaped a blockade. The friendly fire deaths bring to 171 the number of people reported killed since militants waving the black flags of the Islamic State (IS) group began rampaging through the Muslim city of Marawi last week. Shortly after the violence erupted President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law across the southern region of Mindanao, home to 20 million people, to quell what he said was an IS bid to establish a base in the mainly Catholic Philippines. |

Andy Rubin’s plan for his Amazon Echo killer sounds absolutely crazy Posted: 31 May 2017 08:10 AM PDT Andy Rubin's Essential company unveiled two products earlier this week: the Essential Phone that should launch later this month, and Essential Home, an Amazon Echo competitor. The latter is Rubin's most daring device of the two, as it comes bundled with a crazy, idealistic idea from its creator.
Rubin wants Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and everyone else in the tech business to play "nice," as CNET explains it. That is, all these tech giants that already make products that compete with Essential's should play nice for the Essential Home to become the device Rubin envisioned. You see, the main feature of the Essential Home is a new operating system that Rubin calls Ambient OS, which should be a bridge for all the other smart devices that we have around home. Rubin explained during his appearance at the Code Conference that for the Home to thrive, it's practically essential that all other devices you already have can talk to it. Ambient OS wants to power an open ecosystem that would support a variety of competing products, including the virtual assistants of other companies. The Essential Home could support Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, and Google's Assistant. In theory, that sounds great. In practice, it's unlikely for at least one of those assistants to play nice with competing devices, and we all know what it is. "I'm going to offer to support all those," Rubin said. "And it's really up to the companies that support all those ecosystems if they want to work with me." Rubin's "trick" is apparently to plug into the developer tools available on each of those platforms. "Everybody's creating an island by creating their own ecosystem. Building bridges is the best way to describe what we're doing with the Home device," he said. Again, that sounds good on paper. But pulling it off is a lot harder. Sure, Amazon is willing to have its Alexa assistant on a variety of devices right now. But the same doesn't go for Apple or anyone else who sells the Assistant as part of a certain type of product. The Essential Home can be ordered at this time, and it's unclear when it'll launch. |

J.K. Recent immigrants to the U.S. are better educated: report Posted: 01 Jun 2017 02:08 PM PDT Nearly half the recent immigrants to the United States have college degrees, reflecting a steady increase in educational attainment fueled largely by growing numbers of people from Asia, a study released on Thursday showed. Rising immigration from countries such as India, China and the Philippines helped increase the share of arrivals with a bachelor's degree to 48 percent between 2011 and 2015 from 27 percent in the five years through 1990, according to an analysis of U.S. Census data by the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington-based nonpartisan think tank. The findings followed comments by President Donald Trump in March that the United States had "lower-skilled immigration" and should switch to a "merit-based" system to attract people who could support themselves rather than strain public resources. |

Jeremy Corbyn hints he could delay Donald Trump’s contentious state visit to Britain Posted: 31 May 2017 10:22 AM PDT Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has hinted he could delay Donald Trump's contentious state visit to Britain later this year if he is elected Prime Minister in seven days' time. In an interview with The Independent, Mr Corbyn said he was "very concerned" about the speed in which Mr Trump received the honour by Theresa May – just seven days after the political neophyte took office. The President's predecessor, Barack Obama, was extended the invitation by the former Prime Minister David Cameron over 800 days into his administration. |
Signs of the time: Fake U.S. immigration control posters found in Washington Posted: 01 Jun 2017 01:29 PM PDT Residents of at least one Washington D.C. neighborhood woke up on Thursday to find the area plastered with posters urging them to turn in illegal immigrants, but federal authorities denied putting up the signs and denounced them as inciting fear. The bogus posters bearing the seal of the Department of Homeland Security warned about criminal offenses related to harboring or helping people in the country illegally, and gave phone numbers to report information about them to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "If you see something, say something," said the flyer, titled "Sanctuary City Neighborhood Public Notice" and written on the ICE letterhead. |

Everything you need to know about T-Mobile’s summer deals Posted: 01 Jun 2017 12:36 PM PDT T-Mobile is looking to keep its good year rolling with a new set of offers, explicetly designed to steal customers from other carriers. Starting today, any postpaid customer from one of the other big carriers can jump ship to T-Mobile and have their device payments paid off by T-Mobile. It's an objectively fantastic deal, but as with any carrier incentive, there's a bunch of red tape attached. Here's what you need to know before you leap.
Verizon vs everyone elseThe first thing you have to understand is that there's two separate deals going on here. The first, called GetOutOfTheRed, is for Verizon customers who have an iPhone SE, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, or 7 Plus, Google Pixel, or Pixel XL. Anyone who is currently paying off one of those phones to Verizon in monthly instalments can port their number to T-Mobile and get a prepaid Mastercard in the mail 15 days later for all the remaining payments on the phone. Long story short: switch to T-Mobile, and you'll have your iPhone or Pixel paid off for you. Even if you hate T-Mobile's network, you can switch back to Verizon once you receive the prepaid card, and you've spent one month on T-Mobile in return for a free phone. There are still a few terms and conditions attached. You have to have had the phone for at least 60 days already, and you have to buy T-Mobile's $15-per-month insurance initially. You can cancel the insurance plan once your prepaid card has come in the mail. You're also not eligible if you were previously a T-Mobile customer who took advantage of a similar deal in the past to have an early termination fee paid off. Other than that, restrictions are virtually non-existent. There's no limit to the payout, so you can port four lines with iPhone 7s you bought in February, and get every single remaining cent paid off. Other phones and carriersFor every carrier and device that doesn't qualify under the plan above, T-Mobile has a different deal, called Carrier Freedom. The biggest difference between the Verizon GetOutOfTheRed deal and Carrier Freedom is that Carrier Freedom requires you to buy a new phone on T-Mobile's network with a device payment plan. You still get your old phone paid off, and you still get to keep the phone. Most of the same conditions apply -- you need to have had the phone for at least 60 days, you have to port your number, and you have to activate a new T-Mobile One plan. But you also have to buy a new phone on T-Mobile's network. The good news is that it doesn't specify which phone. So, you can still get your $750 iPhone 7 paid off, but you now have to buy some kind of phone on T-Mobile's network. The most popular option seems to be the Samsung Galaxy J3, which is $150 retail or just $6 per month. If you go from paying $30 a month for an iPhone 7 to paying $6 a month for a Samsung J3 (which you can also just resell on eBay), it's really not a bad deal. |
