A fake Kim Jong-Un said hi to North Korean cheerleaders, who didn't take it well Posted: 14 Feb 2018 04:40 PM PST Guess someone was going to do it. A Kim Jong-un impersonator went to greet North Korean cheerleaders at the Winter Olympics, and you can bet it caused quite the stir. SEE ALSO: Olympics volunteer could not be more unimpressed with winter games Only identified as Howard, the Australian man of Chinese descent attended the women's ice hockey match between a unified Korean team and Japan on Wednesday. During the match, he walked over to the group of North Koreans waving a unified Korea flag — only to be pushed aside by a group of apparent DPRK minders. Suffice it to say, the some of the North Korean cheerleaders weren't so impressed. Soon after, Howard said he was surrounded by South Korean policemen who didn't let him leave for his own protection. He was eventually released, but after the game finished. "They told me they had to detain me for my own safety. I told them look, mate, I didn't break any laws, I didn't make any political statements, I told them I just turned up as a ticket holder. I'm allowed to watch the game like anyone else," he added. Police have now surrounded and asked the apparent impersonator to come with him, he says his name's Howard, was just cheering and looks like this, and didn't commit any crime. Refuses to go with them. South Korea police apparently unsure what to do pic.twitter.com/pGzvV0ufcq — Vincent Bevins (@Vinncent) February 14, 2018 It's not the first time Howard has made an appearance at the Winter Olympics. Here he was with a Donald Trump impersonator, Dennis Alan, at the opening ceremony. Image: RYAN PIERSE / GETTY IMAGESDespite clearly riling up a country which has no problem with crushing dissidence, Howard isn't worried about finding himself in danger. "I'm not just a lookalike. I consider myself a satirist. For people that come from countries with freedom of speech, I think it's important to take the piss out [mock] of our leaders," he said. "The most feared weapon of any dictatorship is satire." WATCH: This is how Margot Robbie looked like a master figure skater on 'I, Tonya' |

18 school shootings in US in 2018 Posted: 14 Feb 2018 04:24 PM PST The deadly gun rampage at a Florida high school on Wednesday took to 18 the number of school shootings across the United States so far this year -- a phenomenon that authorities seem powerless to prevent. The stunning number underscored how commonplace gun violence has become in America, with students in elementary and secondary schools regularly performing drills on how to react in an "active shooter" situation. According to the independent Everytown for Gun Safety group, eight of the 18 school shooting incidents so far this year, which cover primary schools to universities, involved guns being discharged with no one injured. |
Florida high school coach hailed a hero after 'shielding students from bullets' Posted: 14 Feb 2018 09:42 PM PST A football coach at the Florida high school where a gunman killed at least 17 people is being hailed a hero after reportedly throwing himself in front of students to protect them. Aaron Feis was taken to hospital in critical condition after the alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County on Wednesday afternoon. The coach, who also worked as a security guard at the school for at least eight years, was initially said to be fighting for his life. However, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel later announced that "a beloved football coach is dead," without naming the coach. "This is one of the genuinely greatest people to walk this earth. jumped in front of the bullets to save some students lives... unbelievable," Mike Schmidt wrote on Twitter. This, ladies and gentlemen, if the face of a hero. Coach Aaron Feis was injured protecting a student in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and, at last report, is in critical condition. He is a friend to all students that know him. He was always so nice to me when I went to school there, and I know he is close with my brother and his friends. Please, take a moment to send healing prayers for him. A post shared by Angelica Losada (@jelly_lo) on Feb 14, 2018 at 2:42pm PST "Coaches are always protectors. Today he sacrificed his body for his students. Some heroes wear Gatorade towels over their shoulders," Anthony DiCicco tweeted. One former student paid tribute to the coach, posting a picture of him with the caption: "This, ladies and gentlemen, if the face of a hero." Andrew Hofmann, a former student who recently coached the swimming and water polo teams, said Mr Feis took his security guard role very seriously. "He's very well dedicated to the safety of the school during the daytime," Hofmann told the Miami Herald. Hofmann described the coach as "a quiet person" with a good sense of humour. "When there's a funny joke, he is always laughing for sure," he said. Feis graduated from Stoneman Douglas High in 1999 and worked at the school for his entire coaching career, according to the school's website. The Valentine's Day bloodshed began after the assailant, wearing a gas mask, stalked into the school carrying an AR-15 assault rifle, ammunition cartridges and smoke grenades, said Senator Bill Nelson, who had been briefed by federal law enforcement officials. He then pulled a fire alarm, prompting students and staff to pour from their classrooms into hallways. "There the carnage began," Senator Bill Nelson told CNN. The death toll would make it the third-worst school shooting in recent US history after the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook attacks. It is the 18th school shooting this year, according to campaign group Every Town for Gun Safety. |

Zimbabwe's president leads tributes to opposition leader Tsvangirai Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:53 AM PST By Alfonce Mbizwo HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa led tributes to late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Thursday, describing the long-time rival of recently ousted president Robert Mugabe as a dedicated defender of democracy. Arguably Zimbabwe's most popular politician, Tsvangirai died on Wednesday evening aged 65 after a long battle with cancer. Tsvangirai will receive a state funeral, but will not be buried at the National Heroes' Acre, largely reserved for ruling Patriotic Front guerrillas killed during the independence war, Mnangagwa said. |

Mike Pence *may* have just bought his wife a Valentine's Day gift at CVS Posted: 14 Feb 2018 05:40 PM PST Nothing says "Mother, I love you" like a $11.99 box of chocolates from a drug store. Or maybe some flowers. Or even a teddy bear holding a heart. Vice President Mike Pence was reportedly spotted at a CVS in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening. While that normally would be no big deal, today is Valentine's Day, and Pence apparently bought a love-themed gift, presumably for his wife, who he calls Mother. White House reporter Jacqueline Alemany tweeted that she saw Pence exit the CVS on 19th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, which is just a few short blocks from the White House and the Vice President's Ceremonial Office. "Spectators say he purchased a Valentine's Day gift for his wife," Alemany wrote. Just spotted @VP exiting the CVS on 19th & Penn. Spectators say he purchased a Valentine's Day gift for his wife. (don't worry, I won't spoil what the contents of the gift are @SecondLady) — Jacqueline Alemany (@JaxAlemany) February 14, 2018 Though Alemany would not reveal exactly what the gift for Mother was, we can promise it was not very thoughtful or original. After all, this is the store I made my real mother buy my 5th grade girlfriend a Valentine's Day gift. One Twitter user said they personally saw Pence buying flowers. I just saw mike pence in person today leaving a cvs , he was buying flowers at 6pm and I know it's a privilege to say this but I've never been that close to someone who is so vehemently against who I am as a person and I'm honestly very uncomfortable right now — laur (@wadesheartmate) February 15, 2018 Some people would consider this a sign that the VP was hard at work and didn't properly allot time to get Mother a gift. Maybe the couple doesn't take the Hallmark holiday very seriously, and a small gesture from CVS is plenty, though Pence's annual salary is $230,700. But spotting Pence buying a last-minute gift from CVS brings a warm feeling to our cold, dead hearts regardless. Getting your SO a last-minute gift or card from CVS because you are so swamped is literally the most Washington thing ever. I know people far less high-level than Pence who have done this. #theglamorouslife https://t.co/2oydqBOaUu — Garance Franke-Ruta (@thegarance) February 14, 2018 We should have known Mike Pence is the kind of guy who'd buy his wife's gift at CVS. As the community of Fort Lauderdale struggled to rebound from the attack on a high school, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz appeared briefly before magistrate court judge Kim Theresa Mollica. Cruz was wearing an orange jump suit, with his hands in front of him, and did not look at the judge when she addressed him. |

Colombian Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas said he had expressed concern to his Venezuelan counterpart General Vladimir Padrino in a telephone conversation, and that they had agreed to meet to coordinate security plans at the border. Villegas said Venezuelans had collaborated with the National Liberation Army (ELN) in attacks in Colombia and been involved in killings and robberies. |

How 1 Very Special Submarine Ravaged Japan During World War II Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:13 AM PST At midnight on July 23, the Barb slipped up to within a kilometer of the shore, and a landing party commanded by Lt. William Walke, paddled quietly to the beach. While three men took up guard positions—they encountered a sleeping Japanese guard in a watchtower, whom they left unharmed—the other five buried the demolition charge and managed not blow themselves up jury-rigging the detonation circuit. In the closing months of World War II, heavy losses and depleted fuel stocks kept many of Japan's remaining combat aircraft grounded and warships in port, awaiting an anticipated amphibious invasion. |
