Nine dead in historic South Carolina rains and flooding Posted: 05 Oct 2015 04:19 PM PDT Floodwaters inundating South Carolina after unprecedented rainfall have resulted in nine deaths, more than 500 road and bridge closures and hundreds of rescues of people trapped in homes and cars by the rising water, officials said on Monday. Governor Nikki Haley warned residents to remain on alert as rain continued to fall in some of the hardest-hit areas, including the state capital of Columbia, which saw its wettest days on record over the weekend. More than 2 feet of rain have fallen in the past three days in parts of South Carolina, and moderate to heavy rain persisted on Monday in the state's saturated northeastern corner and southeastern North Carolina, the National Weather Service said. |

After rolling out her policies, the Democratic presidential candidate invited the mother of a 6-year-old boy who was killed in the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting to join her on stage at Manchester Community College. "So many of the parents of these precious children who were murdered have taken the unimaginable grief that they have been burying and have tried to be the voices that we need to hear, and I want you to introduce yourself and maybe talk about what you and other parents are trying to do to get the changes that are necessary," Clinton said, choking up. |

(Reuters) - Students still shaken from a shooting rampage days earlier that claimed 10 lives were welcomed back on Monday by grief counselors and comfort dogs to their community college in southern Oregon, but classes remained canceled through the week. The campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles (300 km) south of Portland, was reopened to students and staff to allow them to retrieve vehicles and other belongings left behind in the pandemonium of Thursday's massacre. The reopening also was aimed at helping restore a sense of normalcy on campus before classes and other activities at the college of some 13,000 students - about 3,000 enrolled full time - were set to resume next Monday, school officials said. |
Amtrak train derails in Vermont, seven people hospitalized Posted: 05 Oct 2015 03:38 PM PDT (Reuters) - An Amtrak passenger train hit debris from a rockslide and derailed in central Vermont on Monday, sending at least seven people to the hospital, officials said. The train, carrying 98 passengers and four crew members and traveling from St. Albans, Vermont, to Washington, went off the tracks near Roxbury, about 20 miles (32 km) south of the state capital, Montpelier, Amtrak said in a statement. After the derailment of Train 55, reported to local authorities at 10:30 a.m., one crew member was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, the Federal Railroad Administration said in a statement. |
