No chance for single EU migration policy: Hungarian PM Posted: 19 Jun 2017 11:47 AM PDT Hungary's populist prime minister said Monday he sees no chance for a single EU-wide migration policy, just days after the bloc launched legal action against Budapest for refusing refugees under a controversial solidarity plan. "To say that there will be one integrated, single European migration policy, I do have my doubts and I do not see any chance for this," Viktor Orban told the Benelux and Visegrad group premiers meeting in Warsaw ahead of an EU summit in Brussels later this week. "Hungary is open to any negotiations to this end but we would like to continue to remain realists," the Hungarian PM added. |
Armed Russian jet 'flies within 5 feet of American plane' over Baltic Sea Posted: 20 Jun 2017 07:57 AM PDT An armed Russian fighter jet flew within 5ft (1.5m) of a US plane in a "provocative" manoeuvre over the Baltic Sea, it has been reported. The Sukhoi Su-27 jet approached an American RC-135 reconnaissance plane "rapidly" and flew "erratically", according to officials quoted by Fox News. The US considers the incident, which took place some 25 miles north-west of Kaliningrad, an unsafe intercept. |

Teen slams hypocritical school dress code in the perfect senior quote Posted: 19 Jun 2017 03:12 PM PDT High school senior Tori DiPaolo is now a hero on Twitter for using her senior quote to fight sexism. DiPaolo's school, West Milford High in New Jersey, bans girls from wearing shoulder baring tops on most days, but the robes required for senior photos happen to show a whole lot of ... wait for it ... shoulder. Tori: 1Dress code: 0 pic.twitter.com/1HHgjg84AE — Tori (@tori_dipaolo) June 13, 2017 SEE ALSO: Rapper/philosopher T-Pain gives student a senior quote and it's glorious DiPaolo called attention to this blatant contradiction with a self-quote: "I'm sorry, did my shoulders distract you from reading this quote?" Let's just say Twitter was here for it. This is the best senior quote ever. You're a fucking iconic ass queen & I applaud the fuck out this shit FUCK IT UP QUEEN https://t.co/29vsd6JALw — Brittany PINNED (@LitLikeBrittt) June 17, 2017 You are an awesome young lady with the world at your fingertips. Never settle and don't let the system box you in. GL — Angel Valdez (@GiJoeValdez) June 16, 2017 yo Tori, this is hype a/f. I applaud this shit — Nik Latrone (@NikHasTricks) June 17, 2017 It really is the perfect quote coming from someone who describes themselves as infamous for fighting their school's dress code double standards. DiPaolo finds that her school unfairly applies the dress code to girls but not boys. "My school's dress code prohibits boys from wearing muscle shirts," DiPaolo told the Huffington Post. "But they do all the time and don't get in trouble yet, when my bra strap accidentally slips I have to miss class time to go change." A+ trolling, Tori. Calling out sexism with honors. WATCH: |

Apple’s legal battle with Qualcomm is getting even worse Posted: 20 Jun 2017 02:08 PM PDT Apple is currently locked in a bitter legal battle with Qualcomm, one of the major chip suppliers for the iPhone. The case relates to the royalties Qualcomm charges for the use of its patents; Apple claims they're unfairly pricey, and has stopped paying Qualcomm for the time being. Qualcomm, as you can imagine, isn't thrilled about this. In the latest development, Apple has argued in a court filing that Qualcomm's business model is illegal and involves licensing patents that aren't even valid.
As it currently stands, Apple is suing Qualcomm in court over its patent licensing system. Apple originally claimed that Qualcomm's demands for patent royalties were not fair or reasonable, so it stopped paying Qualcomm while it tried to pursue the issue through courts. Qualcomm responded with a counter-suit against Apple and its manufacturing partners for non-payment of royalties. In a new court document, Apple has been more specific and made bolder claims against Qualcomm. According to Apple's filing, Qualcomm chooses to license its patents in bundles. Some of those patents are critical for cellular communications, and some aren't. Worse, Apple claims that 12 of Qualcomm's patents are invalid because of conflicts with other patents. Together, the claims basically accuse Qualcomm of abusing the patent licensing system to force companies to pay royalties for patents they don't need, and also accuse Qualcomm of peddling patents that aren't even valid. The stage is set for a long and torturous legal battle at this point, but things are likely to get resolved sooner rather than later. Qualcomm is an essential supplier of chips in iPhones that allow for wireless communication, and with the iPhone 8 on the horizon, Apple can't afford to completely cut off Qualcomm. But at the same time, Apple's royalty payments are huge for Qualcomm, as is the contract for supplying chips to Apple. With all that's at stake, some kind of settlement is still the most likely outcome. Let's just hope it comes before an all-out legal fight seeks injunctions on Apple products, which could delay upcoming launches (cough, iPhone 8!) for months. |

Philando Castile shooting: officer said he felt in danger after smelling pot in car Posted: 20 Jun 2017 04:39 PM PDT Dash-camera footage released along with the transcript clearly picks up Castile telling the officer 'I do have a firearm on me'. The Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile told state investigators that he believed his life was danger because he smelled marijuana in his car, according to transcripts released on Tuesday along with dash-camera footage. Officer Jeronimo Yanez said in an interview following the fatal traffic stop that Castile's apparent willingness to use the drug in front of his young daughter and girlfriend led Yanez to believe that the 32-year-old posed a serious threat. |

Tesla is ‘actively talking’ about opening up its Supercharger network to other automakers Posted: 20 Jun 2017 03:27 PM PDT When the Model S was first released a few years ago, one of the biggest hurdles Tesla had to contend with centered on 'range anxiety', the fear or belief that a Tesla out on the open road was liable to run out of juice before reaching its destination or a charging station. To help assure prospective buyers that they didn't have to be afraid of becoming stranded, Tesla had the foresight to start rolling out a Supercharger network that allowed Tesla owners to charge up their cars free of charge on long drives. What's more, Tesla's Supercharger stations have the ability to charge a Model S or Model X relatively quickly, with a station being able to provide a car with 170 miles worth of juice in approximately 30 minutes.
Over the last few years, Tesla has dramatically increased the reach of its Supercharger network, both in the United States and all across the globe. Today, Tesla has more than 2,630 Supercharger stations at approximately 373 locations worldwide. And with the Model 3 release looming, not to mention ongoing sales of the Model S and the Model X still going strong, Tesla earlier this year signaled its intention to rapidly expand its Supercharger network, noting this past February that it will be doubling the "number of North American Supercharger locations in 2017." Interestingly enough, Tesla may eventually open up one of its core strategic assets to competitors. During a recent presentation at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association's Energy Fair in Wisconsin (via Jalopnik), Tesla CTO JB Straubel said that the company is "actively talking" with other auto manufacturers about opening up its Supercharger network to other cars. When asked about the potential for Tesla to share its intellectual property with other companies, Straubel's answer was rather straight forward. "For things like Supercharger," Straubel said, "we are actively talking to other car makers and we are trying to figure out a structure to work with them." With the final Model 3 unveiling set to take place next month, we imagine Elon Musk may have more to say on the matter in just a few weeks. |
5 Surprising Ways to Get Most Value Out of Your Grill Posted: 20 Jun 2017 07:07 AM PDT Because of the relatively long cook time, you won't want to do this next to fast-cooking items such as burgers or hot dogs, but if you're cooking something for a longer period, bread works wonderfully on the grill. The beans may need a bit more cooking later, but this technique will do most of the cooking for you. If you're cooking something low and slow, you might just find that the beans are done and ready to use with a side dish when the main course is done, making a pairing like black beans and barbecued ribs work out perfectly. |
