India struggles to recover American killed by tribe Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:34 PM PST Indian authorities said Thursday that it may take "some days" to recover the body of an American killed in a hail of arrows shot by a tribe untouched by modern civilisation. John Allen Chau, 27, was attacked as he set foot last week on the remote North Sentinel Island, one of the Indian Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal that is off limits to visitors, according to police. Dependra Pathak, the head of the region's police, told AFP that authorities sent a helicopter to the area and then a ship to identify where the incident took place. |
France imposes sanctions on 18 Saudi citizens over Khashoggi killing Posted: 22 Nov 2018 08:50 AM PST France said on Thursday it had imposed sanctions, including travel bans, on 18 Saudi citizens linked to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and said more could follow depending on results of an investigation. Berlin on Monday also banned 18 Saudis and moved to halt all arms sales to Saudi Arabia. The bans bind all members of the European Union's passport-free Schengen zone, it said. |
Yahoo News Explains: Who were the first Pilgrims in America? Posted: 22 Nov 2018 08:34 AM PST If you remember anything from history class, you already know a small group of people boarded the Mayflower in 1620 in hopes of a better life in America. A couple of the crew members had actually been to America before to fish or to explore. A man on the Mayflower, Stephen Hopkins, had tried to settle in the New World 10 years earlier but got shipwrecked in Bermuda. Shakespeare's renowned play "The Tempest" was allegedly based on that wreck. |

Posted: 21 Nov 2018 06:35 PM PST The head of Russian military intelligence, which is accused of orchestrating the Salisbury Novichok attack, has died. Igor Korobov died on Wednesday after "a serious and long illness," Russian news agencies reported, citing the defence ministry. The 63-year-old GRU Chief's death comes after a series of embarrassments for the secretive organisation, for which he was reportedly berated by President Vladimir Putin. Mr Putin reportedly gave Mr Korobov a personal dressing down last month for the bungled operation to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter. Russian journalist Sergey Kanev, who writes for an investigative group funded by Putin foe and former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, reported that Mr Korobov fell ill after the meeting with Mr Putin. Evgeny Buzhinsky, a former Russian general, dismissed allegations of foul play. Commenting on suggestions that Mr Korobov's death was untimely, he told the BBC: "No you are completely wrong. It was a long, long struggle against a very bad disease ... In Russia no one is suspicious, believe me." The defence ministry called General Korobov, who ran the spy agency since 2016, "a wonderful person, a faithful son of Russia and a patriot of his homeland." It did not give further details about his death. Gen Korobov had worked in military intelligence since 1985. In 2016, Mr Putin made him head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces - also known as the GRU. He took over from Gen Igor Sergun, who died of a heart attack at the age of the 58. Michael Carpenter, a Russia adviser for Barack Obama's administration, tweeted on Thursday: "His predecessor died in 2016 of a heart attack. Life expectancy for incumbents of this job is pretty low, but then so is the median life expectancy in Russia." At a glance | GRU Gen Korobov was sanctioned along with other GRU officers by the United States for activities that "undermine cybersecurity on behalf of the Russian government." The West has blamed the GRU for a string of brazen attacks. Britain has accused it of attempting to poison Mr Skripal and his daughter with a nerve agent in the English city of Salisbury. The botched assassination attempt led to the death of Dawn Sturgess, who, along with partner Charlie Rowley, fell ill after handling a container contaminated with the nerve agent in June. The Netherlands believes the agency has tried to hack the global chemical weapons watchdog, and US intelligence agencies said GRU was behind attempts to hack the 2016 US presidential election. Russia denies all the allegations. But the GRU has also suffered humiliation after the UK revealed the identities of the suspects behind the Skripal poisonings. The agents accused of carrying out the poisoning were named as Alexander Mishkin and Anatoly Chepiga, Dutch and British authorities also exposed the identities of the four Russian GRU operators who took part in the bungled operation to hack the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Four GRU operatives were caught trying to hack into the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons after Salisbury Credit: Ministerie van Defensie The four Russian spies had in their possession laptops and mobile phones holding damning proof of the cyber hacking operations of its notorious Unit 26165, also known as "GRU 85 Main Special Service Center". One of them even had a taxi receipt showing he had been picked up from the rear entrance of Unit 26165's headquarters when he went to the airport. There was fresh embarrassment when further database research revealed 305 other individuals thought to be working for the Russian intelligence agency. At the time, Bob Seely, the Tory MP who sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee, described the lapses that led to the identity of the GRU spies being exposed as "extraordinarily unprofessional". "It shows that subversion is probably beyond their professional capability - they can't even cover their tracks in the most basic of ways. It is very sloppy and makes President Putin look foolish," he added. The GRU has been at the forefront of several of the most controversial Russian intelligence operations in recent years. As well as the brazen hacks, its agents were accused of a failed attempt to mount a coup in Montenegro in 2016, and its special forces are deeply involved in Russia's semi-covert wars in Ukraine and Syria. |

Hundreds searching for remains of California wildfire victims Posted: 22 Nov 2018 01:53 PM PST Hundreds of volunteers and police officers spent the Thanksgiving holiday combing through the wreckage of California's deadliest wildfire, searching for the remains of victims killed in the blaze as rains looked set to complicate their work. The Camp Fire killed at least 83 people and 563 are still unaccounted for in and around Paradise, a community of nearly 27,000 people that was largely incinerated when the flames swept through two weeks ago, according to authorities. "We haven't taken the day off," Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said in a video message posted online on Thanksgiving. |

Midterm elections: Democrats lead popular vote in House by largest margin in history Posted: 22 Nov 2018 02:25 AM PST Democrats are set to pull off the largest midterm elections victory in history, according to a breakdown of the popular vote in races for the House of Representatives. The party leads the Republicans by more than 8.9 million votes across the US, raw data compiled by the Cook Political Report, an independent, non-partisan political analysis website. Previously, the largest margin of victory was 8.7 million, which came in the 1974 midterm elections after the Watergate scandal and Richard Nixon's resignation. |
Chief of Russia's military intelligence agency dies Posted: 22 Nov 2018 05:53 AM PST Russia's military intelligence chief who oversaw a series of notorious operations abroad has died after a long illness, with Moscow praising him Thursday as a "great man" and a patriot. Igor Korobov, 62, had headed the defence ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) since 2016 and was the target of US sanctions. Korobov's 57-year-old first deputy, Vice Admiral Igor Kostyukov, has been appointed acting GRU chief and is likely become his successor, state news agency TASS said, citing a military source. |

A slippery trade: oil slump proves bears right Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:27 AM PST The latest collapse in oil prices has proved some investors right in their lack of confidence in energy stocks this year. Crude prices surged to a four-year high early in 2018 as tensions with Iran and OPEC supply cuts raised concerns that global oil supply was dwindling. But the narrative has flipped since October as worries over a global trade war and rising U.S. shale oil production mounted, driving oil to a one-year low on Friday. |
Posted: 22 Nov 2018 04:20 AM PST Facebook is coming under fire for allowing a man in South Sudan to make a post auctioning off his 17-year-old daughter to the highest bidder as a child bride. Philips Anyang Ngong, a human rights lawyer who tried to stop the girl's sale, said the viral Facebook post was "the biggest test of child abuse, trafficking and auctioning of a human being." He called for all of those involved, including Facebook, to be held responsible. |
Posted: 22 Nov 2018 03:31 AM PST The CIA has a recording of a phonecall in which Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman gave instructions to "silence Jamal Khashoggi as soon as possible", a Turkish news website has reported. Gina Haspel, CIA director, is said to have revealed the existence of a wiretapped call between Prince Mohammed and his brother Khaled bin Salman, who is Saudi's ambassador to the US, to Turkish officials during a visit to Ankara last month, according to Hurriyet. "It is said that the crown prince gave an instruction to silence JamalKhashoggi as soon as possible and this instruction was captured during the CIA wiretapping," Hurriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi wrote on Thursday. "The subsequent murder is the ultimate confirmation of this instruction." The brothers are reportedly heard talking about the "discomfort" caused by the Washington Post columnist's criticism of the kingdom's administration. A Turkish official contacted by Reuters said he had no information about such a recording. Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Prince Mohammed, was killed on Oct. 2 inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, talks to Haberturk TV about the day he went missing Credit: AP If confirmed, the wiretap could call into question Washington's official claim that they have found no evidence to support accusations the murder was ordered by the prince, Riyadh's de-facto leader, himself. The leak comes days after President Donald Trump signalled his support for Prince Mohammed, in a statement which declared he would not further punish Saudi for the murder. In an extraordinary statement subtitled "America First!" Mr Trump said on Tuesday that "our intelligence agencies continue to assess all information, but it could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event -- maybe he did and maybe he didn't!" Speaking to reporters at his Florida resort on Thursday, President Trump doubled down, saying the CIA had not come to a conclusion over whether the order came from the top. "I hate the crime…I hate the coverup. I will tell you this: The crown prince hates it more than I do," he said. The president has since faced calls from members of his own party to re-evaluate ties with the ultraconservative kingdom, but Mr Trump has said the benefits of a good relationship outweigh the possibility its own prince ordered the killing. President Donald Trump speaks to the media about Khashoggi's murder Credit: Getty The Turkish media has published a drip-drip of leaks of information since the news of the Khashoggi's death in early October, designed to put pressure on both Riyadh and the US to respond. Riyadh initially remained silent about the 59-year-old columnist's disappearance, before claiming that he left the consulate after a short meeting with officials. They then changed their story several times, later claiming that Khashoggi was killed by mistake in a "fistfight" gone wrong. They admitted earlier this month that he was killed and dismembered after attempts to persuade him to come home failed. Saudi today warned criticism of the prince was a "red line". Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told the BBC that calls for MBS, as he is nicknamed, to be held accountable for the killing, "would not be tolerated", nor would discussion of "anything disparaging". Federica Mogherini, the EU's top diplomat, said on Thursday all those "really responsible" for the murder of journalist Khashoggi have to be held accountable. "Those responsible, really responsible for this terrible murder have to be accountable," she told a news conference in Ankara. |
Climate change 'will inflict substantial damages on US lives' Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:48 PM PST A home is overshadowed by towering smoke plumes in Paradise, California . Climate change is already harming Americans' lives with "substantial damages" set to occur as global temperatures threaten to surge beyond internationally agreed limits, a major US government report has warned. The influence of climate change is being felt across the US with increases in disastrous wildfires in the west, flooding on the east coast, soil loss in the midwest and coastal erosion in Alaska, according to the US National Climate Assessment. |
Four killed as gunmen attack Chinese consulate in Karachi Posted: 23 Nov 2018 03:16 AM PST Four people were killed on Friday when gunmen armed with hand grenades and a suicide vest stormed the Chinese consulate in the Pakistani city of Karachi, officials said, with the attack claimed by a separatist group which branded Beijing "an oppressor". Pakistani authorities said that security forces had secured the area after the attack, the latest assault on Chinese nationals in the country, where Beijing has poured billions of dollars into one of the largest projects in its massive Belt and Road programme. China "strongly condemned" the attack and asked Pakistan to take measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in the country, as well as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) mega-project. |
Lloyds CEO Must Explain Whistleblower Actions or Quit: Lawmaker Posted: 22 Nov 2018 04:45 AM PST "Our concerns relate to the allegations of the cover-up of the fraud, rather than the fraud itself," Kevin Hollinrake, a lawmaker who co-chairs the all-party parliamentary group on fair business banking, wrote in a letter to Antonio Horta-Osorio. While the incidents that led to criminal convictions occurred years ago, scrutiny of how Lloyds handled the affair has grown as the bank settled last week with the whistleblower, former risk officer Sally Masterton. It claimed some executives at HBOS hid the fraud at one of that bank's branches before Lloyds acquired the lender at the peak of the financial crisis. |

Saudi crown prince goes on tour of Arab states amid Khashoggi storm Posted: 22 Nov 2018 01:04 PM PST Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday at the start of a tour of several Arab countries, his first trip abroad since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi that caused a global outcry. The prince, the country's de facto ruler, is also expected to participate in a G20 meeting in Buenos Aires at the end of the month which will be attended by leaders from the United States, Turkey and European countries. The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince, at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul six weeks ago has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered Prince Mohammed's image abroad. |

Since then, investigators have been doing DNA testing on recovered body parts.
