Founder of 'revolutionary' US blood-testing startup once valued at $9bn charged with fraud Posted: 16 Jun 2018 04:48 AM PDT Theranos was established by Elizabeth Holmes in 2003 when she was just a 19-year-old Stanford drop out. Within a year it had won $6m (£4.5m) backing from investors attracted by Ms Holmes's desire to disrupt the industry monopoly over blood tests – and she was toasted as a rising star of Silicon Valley. Ms Holmes and Mr Balwani claimed the Theranos analyser could perform a full range of clinical tests using tiny blood samples drawn from a finger stick, asserting that its results were more accurate, reliable and faster than those from conventional blood tests. |

North Korea 'sought diplomatic back channel through Jared Kushner' Posted: 17 Jun 2018 10:29 AM PDT Jared Kushner was partly responsible for setting up a diplomatic back channel with North Korea that led to the Singapore summit. Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser was approached by an American businessman based in Singapore last year, the New York Times reported. Gabriel Schulze, whose family made a fortune in the mining business, told Mr Kushner that a highly placed North Korean official was seeking to speak with him to look into the possibility of a meeting between Mr Trump and Kim Jong-un. The approach came as tensions heightened between the two countries, and Mr Trump and Kim exchanged threats. Senior North Korean officials wanted to get in touch with Mr Kushner because of his family relationship to Mr Trump. Hidden trillions: What if North Korea's economy opened up? They reportedly felt that, amid a rapid turnover of senior White House staff, Mr Kushner would continue to have influence with the president. Mr Kushner reported the possibility of a diplomatic back channel to Mike Pompeo, who was then the Director of the CIA, the New York Times reported. It might have been expected that Mr Kushner would tell the US State Department instead, but he did not have a good relationship with Rex Tillerson, then the Secretary of State. Mr Pompeo took the lead in negotiations with North Koreans and subsequently replaced Mr Tillerson as Secretary of State. The White House and the CIA declined to comment on Mr Kushner's role. Mr Schulze told the New York Times: "I do not discuss the nature of my business or personal relationships." Mr Kushner was also said to have been involved in the setting up a diplomatic back channel between Mr Trump's administration and China early in the presidency. Mr Kushner reportedly set up a diplomatic back channel through Cui Tiankai, China's ambassador to Washington, which helped lead to Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, visiting Mr Trump at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida retreat in April last year. Meanwhile, it emerged that a former confidant of Mr Trump met with a Russian individual who offered "dirt" on Hillary Clinton for $2 million (£1.5 million). Roger Stone, the confidant, told the Washington Post he rejected the offer in May 2016, telling the Russian: "You don't understand Donald Trump. He doesn't pay for anything." It also emerged that the Russian had previously been an FBI informant. Mr Stone, who met the man at a restaurant in Florida, said he appeared to have been the target of an "FBI sting". |

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen called for "full clarification" from the German authorities, while Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz urged Berlin to "cooperate properly" in shedding light on newspaper reports regarding the past activities of the federal intelligence service, the BND. |
America Wasn't Tough Enough on China's ZTE—Here's How to Make It Right Posted: 16 Jun 2018 08:01 PM PDT The Trump Administration has been better than its predecessors when it comes to Asia. The United States Commerce Department has granted Chinese telecom company, ZTE, a reprieve from a seven-year ban on using U.S.-made parts—a bad that was effectively a corporate death sentence. This is going to hurt ZTE—and China's Communist Party (CCP). |
Blasts kill at least 20 in northeast Nigeria: police Posted: 17 Jun 2018 01:43 PM PDT By Ahmed Kingimi MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Blasts have killed at least 20 people in northeast Nigeria, police said, while residents said the toll was even higher in the largest attack for weeks in a region blighted by the Islamist militant Boko Haram insurgency. Security in Nigeria has become a major challenge for President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler whose 2015 election win was largely due to his vow to crush Boko Haram. Buhari has said he will seek a second term. |

Defiant Merkel backs Europe migrant policy as Bavaria row simmers Posted: 16 Jun 2018 07:40 AM PDT By Madeline Chambers BERLIN (Reuters) - Migrant policy requires a European solution, German Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted on Saturday, ceding no ground in a showdown with her Bavarian allies that threatens her three-month-old coalition government. The row is over Merkel's rejection of plans by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, from Bavaria, for Germany unilaterally to send back migrants who have registered in other European Union countries. In her weekly podcast, three days before talks between Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, the chancellor hammered home her stance: "This is a European challenge that also needs a European solution. |

Just call your dad on Father's Day before posting a photo of him on Facebook Posted: 16 Jun 2018 10:10 AM PDT This Father's Day, call your dad. Your dad doesn't care how many likes you collect on Instagram or Facebook. Just pick up the phone and call the guy. SEE ALSO: You haven't heard of this masculinity movement, but it's exactly what men need right now Listen, I get it — you want to show all your friends what a total stud your dad was in his 20s or share a cute childhood, family photo where you look completely adorable and your sister is in peak awkward stage. But before you post a photo on social media, let him hear your voice. Imagine how many likes this guy would get on Instagram. My sister is going to be so mad. He wants to talk to you, not spend 30 minutes trying to figure out how Instagram works, only to see 12 "❤️❤️❤️omg so cute!" comments from people he doesn't know. SEE ALSO: Dad jokes, ranked You might say "but I don't have much to talk to my dad about." Have you ever talked to an 8-year-old? They say some stupid things and your dad used to listen to you talk all the time. As a kid, I spent hours explaining my high-level thoughts about American Gladiators, and you know what? He just listened (and then took me to Costco for a $1 hot dog). Even better than just talking? Ask him a question. Ask him about his day, his life, the latest season of Blue Bloods, whatever — you'll learn something. And maybe you'll discover an even better story to share about him for the 'gram. Russia, Saudi seek raised OPEC output of 1.5 million bpd Posted: 16 Jun 2018 02:40 PM PDT Russia and Saudi Arabia will ask OPEC to hike production by 1.5 million barrels a day in the third quarter of 2018, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday. OPEC and Russia decided together in 2016 to cut their supply in order to push prices up following a crash induced by a global crude production glut. An oil production shortfall in Iran and Venezuela has changed the scenario for the two countries and members of the oil cartel. |

Israel strikes at launchers of burning kites from Gaza Strip Posted: 17 Jun 2018 05:55 AM PDT The Israeli military said its aircraft struck a vehicle early Sunday belonging to someone who sent burning kites into Israel from Gaza. No one was injured in the strike, but it marks an escalation in Israel's response to a phenomenon that has wreaked havoc on agriculture in southern Israel in recent weeks. Burning kites set fields ablaze in more than a dozen locations on a hot, windy, dry Saturday. Gazans began flying kites with burning rags attached to them during the mass protests against the Israeli and Egyptian blockade of the territory. Israeli troops have fired on the protesters, killing more than 100 since the weekly demonstrations began in March. The Israeli military says militants have used the protests as cover to carry out attacks and to try to breach the border fence. The Islamic militant group Hamas, which rules Gaza, has led the protests. Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for the fires. While Israel has been mostly successful in thwarting militant infiltration attempts and rocket fire, it has struggled to stop the low-tech kites drifting into its territory. A parliamentary committee last week said the fires have destroyed more than 6,000 acres of land in recent weeks, causing some £1.5 million in damages. Israel says it plans to deduct from tax funds it collects for the Palestinians to compensate farmers. A fire burns in scrubland in Israel near the Gaza Strip, in an area where Palestinians have been causing blazes by flying kites and balloons loaded with flammable material Credit: AMIR COHEN/REUTERS The military says its drones have been able to shoot down more than 90 per cent of the kites and flaming balloons, and that it will continue targeting them. Cabinet Minister Naftali Bennett compared the kites to rockets, and said the response should be the same. "We should not wait until Israeli citizens are hurt and only then wake up," he said. In the West Bank, meanwhile, Israeli police evicted Jewish settlers from 10 homes they had built in violation of Israeli law. Israel captured the West Bank along with east Jerusalem in the 1967 war and today about 600,000 settlers live in those areas. Most of the international community considers settlements to be either illegal or illegitimate. Israel's Supreme Court often rules that structures built illegally have to be evacuated and demolished. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said 11 officers were wounded in scuffles and that police arrested six protesters for violence. |

Vietnam launches probe into American detained for 'public disorder' Posted: 16 Jun 2018 03:05 AM PDT Vietnam police have launched a formal criminal investigation into an American man who was among dozens arrested last week during rare protests that erupted across the authoritarian state. American citizen William Anh Nguyen, 32, was detained in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday during a massive rally protesting a government proposal to grant lengthy land leases in new special economic zones. Many protesters expressed fear the land would be handed to China, and thousands gathered in several cities across the country to demand the government not lease land to Beijing for "even one day". |
