(AP) — Military investigators began the arduous task Thursday of answering why a C-130 Hercules cargo plane being flown into retirement by an experienced crew plunged onto a Georgia highway. Families and friends of the nine airmen, meanwhile, grieved and took note of the fact that Puerto Rico's planes are the oldest in the National Guard inventory. |
Posted: 02 May 2018 07:18 PM PDT Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani says that President Donald Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey in part because he would not tell him that the president was not personally a target in the intelligence agency's probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 election. Mr Giuliani, who is a recent addition to Mr Trump's legal team charged with helping deal with special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, made the comment during an appearance on Fox News. "He fired Comey because Comey would not, among other things, say that he wasn't a target of the investigation," Mr Giuliani told the cable network's Sean Hannity, who has himself been a vocal supporter of Mr Trump. |

The USGS said the tremor was very shallow - only 4.3 miles (7 km) deep - and centered 11 miles (17.7 km) southeast of Fern Forest. The USGS said earlier the eruption of the volcano, one of five on the island, followed a series of earthquakes over the past week. |

Starbucks agrees compensation with black men arrested while they waited for a friend Posted: 03 May 2018 03:24 AM PDT Two black men who were arrested as they waited for a friend in a Philadelphia Starbucks last month have reached settlements with the coffee chain and the city. The arrest of Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson on 12 April was captured on video and widely shared online, sparking protests in Pennsylvania over accusations of racial profiling. Mr Robinson and Mr Nelson have now dropped their legal action against the city, agreeing to a symbolic $1 each in compensation and the commitment of $200,000 (£150,000) from officials to fund an entrepreneurship program for public school students. The men, both 23, also reached a confidential financial settlement with Starbucks, who also offered them the opportunity to complete their undergraduate degrees at Arizona State University with full tuition coverage. "We all recognise the importance of communication about differences and solutions, and that we will be measured by our action not words," they said in a joint statement. Mr Robinson added: "It's not a right-now thing … but I feel like we will see the true change over time." Starbucks issued an apology for the incident which saw a store manager call the police when the pair sat down before making an order as they waited for a friend to arrive. The company responded by closing more than 8,000 of its US stores for an afternoon of racial bias training, with Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson also apologising personally to the two men. Demonstrators protest over the arrests of Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson Credit: AP "I want to thank Donte and Rashon for their willingness to reconcile," said Mr Johnson. "I welcome the opportunity to begin a relationship with them to share learnings and experiences. "Starbucks will continue to take actions that stem from this incident to repair and reaffirm our values and vision for the kind of company we want to be." "I am pleased to have resolved the potential claims against the city in this productive manner," he added. |

As Israel-Iran rivalry burns, Russia's Tehran ties may get singed Posted: 04 May 2018 08:36 AM PDT As Israel and Iran increasingly square off against each other amid Syria's multi-dimensional war, it is Russia that finds itself between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Russia has managed to maintain good relations with both Iran and Israel, even as the former has increased its presence in Syria in defense of the Assad regime, raising the latter's hackles. |
Britain 'deeply concerned' by Palestinian president's Holocaust remarks Posted: 03 May 2018 06:49 AM PDT Britain said on Thursday that recent remarks by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the Holocaust were "deeply concerning" and unhelpful to peace in the region. Israel has accused Mr Abbas of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial after the Palestinian leader suggested in a speech that historic persecution of European Jews had been caused by their conduct. "Palestinian President Abbas's comments at the Palestinian National Congress were deeply concerning. Any attempt to justify or explain away any element of the Holocaust is unacceptable," Britain's Middle-East minister Alistair Burt said in a statement. "President Abbas has shown a commitment to non-violence and a two-state solution. But his recent rhetoric does not serve the interests of the Palestinian people and is deeply unhelpful to the cause of peace." Mr Abbas said in his speech that Jews living in Europe had suffered massacres "every 10 to 15 years in some country since the 11th century and until the Holocaust". Citing books written by various authors, Mr Abbas argued: "They say hatred against Jews was not because of their religion, it was because of their social profession. So the Jewish issue that had spread against the Jews across Europe was not because of their religion, it was because of usury and banks." Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas waves in Ramallah on Tuesday Credit: REUTERS/Mohamad Torokman Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday accused Mr Abbas of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial. Jewish groups and diplomats also condemned Mr Abbas' comments, made in a speech on Monday to the Palestinian National Council, that Jews had suffered historically not because of their religion but because they had served as bankers and money lenders. "It would appear that, once a Holocaust denier, always a Holocaust denier," Mr Netanyahu said on Twitter. "I call upon the international community to condemn the grave anti-Semitism of Abu Mazen (Abbas), which should have long since passed from this world." On Thursday, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) parliament was preparing to hand its authority over to a smaller council in a move seen as a concentration of power in the hands of President Mahmoud Abbas's loyalists. The Palestinian National Council agreed Thursday to grant the 115-member Central Council authority to assume the political body's powers, such as appointing a successor to the 83-year-old Palestinian leader and resolving the decade-long rift with the rival Hamas party ruling Gaza. Abbas aide Ahmad Majdalani says the move will "make it easier for the PLO to handle political developments, and to fill any vacuum in PLO positions." The Palestinian National Council, which met this week for the first time in over two decades, was set to formally announce the measure Thursday evening. |

White House denies it is reducing US troops in South Korea Posted: 04 May 2018 12:19 PM PDT Donald Trump claimed removing US troops from South Korea was "not on the table" yesterday but conceded he would "like to save the money" in the future. The comments come ahead of his landmark meeting with Kim Jong-un - the first between a US president and a North Korean leader. America has maintained a military presence on the peninsula since the Korean War ended in 1953 without a peace treaty. North Korea has long sought the removal of US troops as one of its condition for denuclearisation. Mr Trump said yesterday that Kim had not asked for the troops to be removed, suggesting the leader has relaxing his demands as he turns to diplomacy after a year of escalating tensions. "You know, we have 32,000 troops there... But troops are not on the table," Mr Trump told reporters. He added: "Now, I have to tell you, at some point into the future, I would like to save the money." Mr Trump has previously said the United States should consider reducing the number of troops in South Korea unless the country shoulders more of the cost. Officials in the Pentagon have also hinted that a peace treaty between the two Koreas could diminish the need for the US soldiers currently stationed in South Korea, according to US media. The plans were reported by the New York Times on Thursday night, citing several people briefed on the deliberations. However on Friday morning John Bolton, Mr Trump's new national security adviser, dismissed the report. "The New York Times story is utter nonsense," he said. "The President has not asked the Pentagon to provide options for reducing American forces stationed in South Korea." The US president revealed that the time and place for the summit has been set, the details of which would be announced "soon". He has previously suggested the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea would be an appropriate site for the momentous occasion. Mr Trump said he expected a "lot of great things will happen" as he seeks to convince the rogue state to scrap its nuclear weapons programme. The president also hinted that three Americans imprisoned in North Korea could soon be released. "We're doing very well with the hostages," he said. "We're in constant contact with the leadership. We are in constant contact with North Korea". South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un shake hands for the first time at the truce village of Panmunjom Credit: REUTERS Then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo, before taking office as US secretary of state, met Kim last month and reported the North Korean leader was not demanding the withdrawal of all US forces as a precondition for a summit with Mr Trump. South Korea said on Wednesday the issue of US troops stationed in the South was unrelated to any future peace treaty with North Korea and that American forces should stay even if such an agreement is signed. |
Budweiser-maker taps Nikola for up to 800 hydrogen-powered semi trucks Posted: 03 May 2018 08:19 AM PDT Anheuser-Busch bet big on hydrogen fuel for its semitrailer trucks Thursday. The Budweiser beermaker announced it would buy up to 800 big rigs from Nikola Motor Company by 2025 and nearly replace its entire dedicated corporate fleet with trucks powered by renewable energy.
