Ireland tests body of deceased traveler for Ebola Posted: 21 Aug 2014 11:25 AM PDT Ireland is testing a dead person who recently returned from Africa for the Ebola virus, the Health Service Executive (HSE) of Ireland said on Thursday. Appropriate infection control procedures are being put in place in the community and at the mortuary in the north-west county of Donegal where the person's remains lie, pending the outcome of laboratory tests, the HSE said. "The public health department was made aware earlier today of the remains of an individual, discovered early this morning, who had recently traveled to one of the areas in Africa affected by the current Ebola virus disease outbreak," it said. |

Irish ex-PM Albert Reynolds, peace negotiator, dies at 81 Posted: 21 Aug 2014 04:00 PM PDT Former Irish prime minister Albert Reynolds, a central figure in the Northern Ireland peace process who helped broker the 1994 IRA ceasefire, has died aged 81. Reynolds served twice as taoiseach, or prime minister: once in 1992 and then again in 1993-94. His son Philip, who announced that Reynolds had died overnight Wednesday, said his father had recently been suffering from the late stages of Alzheimer's disease. The Irish government said Reynolds would be given a state funeral on Monday, and that all government buildings would fly flags at half mast until the funeral. |

ISIL asked $132.5 million for James Foley, says official Posted: 21 Aug 2014 03:44 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The beheading of freelance journalist James Foley has forced a new debate between the longtime U.S. and British refusal to negotiate with terrorists, and Europe and the Persian Gulf's increasing willingness to pay ransoms in a desperate attempt to free citizens. The dilemma: How to save the lives of captives without financing terror groups and encouraging more kidnappings. |

First Malaysian bodies headed home from Ukraine crash Posted: 21 Aug 2014 08:54 AM PDT A plane carrying the bodies of 20 Malaysian victims of flight MH17, which crashed in Ukraine in July, took off from Amsterdam for Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, Dutch media reported. There was no ceremony for the departure from Schiphol airport, local news agency ANP reported, with the plane to land in Malaysia on Friday, which has been declared a day of national mourning. The plane will be met by Malaysia's king, prime minister and other dignitaries accompanied by a minute of silence at Kuala Lumpur's main international airport, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said last week. The Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down over rebel-held eastern Ukraine on July 17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, killing all 298 on board. |

Angels lose star pitcher for playoff drive Posted: 21 Aug 2014 04:53 PM PDT Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards will miss the remainder of the Major League Baseball season with torn left knee patellar tendon, the team announced Thursday. Richards was 13-4 this season with a 2.61 earned-run average over 26 starts for the Angels, whose 75-50 record is the best in the major leagues. The Angels lead Oakland by 1 1/2 games in the American League West division in a fight between the winningest teams of the season, so losing Richards was a setback the Anaheim-based club could ill afford in its quest to earn a home-field edge throughout the playoffs over the final weeks of the season. |

Ryu bags nine birdies in Canada, grabs LPGA lead Posted: 21 Aug 2014 04:49 PM PDT South Korea's Ryu So-Yeon fired a bogey-free opening round of nine-under par 63 Thursday to seize a one-stroke lead over compatriot Choi Na-Yeon at the LPGA Canadian Women's Open. Ryu, the 2011 US Women's Open champion, hit all 14 fairways and needed only 25 putts, reaching 16 of 18 greens in regulation and chipping in with a sand save to stand atop the leaderboard. "I really feel great about that, especially because before I was going to tee off my warming up shots were really bad," Ryu said. Ninth-ranked Ryu, whose only other LPGA title came at the 2012 Toledo Classic, had 10 top-10 finishes without a victory last year and has nine more this year without lifting a trophy. |

Europeans in push for new UN resolution on Gaza Posted: 21 Aug 2014 04:43 PM PDT Britain, France and Germany have put forward key points of a new UN Security Council resolution on Gaza in a fresh bid to end six weeks of violence, diplomats said Thursday. The European initiative came as fighting flared on the ground, with Israeli airstrikes killing three top Hamas commanders and an Egyptian-led effort to broker peace talks teetering on the verge of collapse. The two-page document obtained by AFP calls for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire that would put an end to the firing of rockets and military operations in the Gaza Strip. It calls for a lifting of the Israeli blockade and a monitoring mechanism to report on ceasefire violations and verify the flow of goods into the Gaza Strip. |

Abandoned Florida panther kitten gets new home in state park Posted: 21 Aug 2014 04:38 PM PDT By Barbara Liston ORLANDO Fla. (Reuters) - A rare Florida panther, found near death as a 1-pound newborn in January, bounded into its permanent new fenced home in a state park on Thursday, now a lively, nearly 50-pound kitten. "He's really a miracle cat," said Susan Strawbridge of the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. A critically endangered animal, only 100 to 180 Florida panthers are believed to be in existence. State biologists working at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge in Naples stumbled by chance on the kitten that had been abandoned by its mother in her den, according to Karen Parker of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. |

Ice Bucket Challenge injures firefighters in US Posted: 21 Aug 2014 04:35 PM PDT Four US firefighters were injured, two seriously, Thursday as they were helping run a so-called Ice Bucket Challenge at a Kentucky university. "We express heartfelt sympathy and prayers for the families of the firefighters who were injured," Campbellsville University university president Michael Carter said in a statement. Local media said that two firefighters were moving the apparatus after the student challenge when a power arc occurred near the power lines, striking and seriously injuring them. The Ice Bucket Challenge, in support of Lou Gehrig's disease research, has sparked a worldwide craze that has taken in everyone from billionaires to sports star and former US presidents. |
