Ukraine protests boil; U.S. says not a coup Posted: 02 Dec 2013 12:42 PM PST The European Union may not be as popular as it was, but events in Ukraine are showing it still has appeal. Despite being racked by increasing "euroskepticism" and economic woes, the 28-member bloc is the object of affection of tens of thousands of Ukrainian demonstrators who continue to march the streets in the biggest protests since the country's Orange Revolution of 2004 – all prompted by support for the EU. On Sunday, protesters unfurled the EU flag in the capital Kiev and demanded the resignation of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych after he turned away from an association agreement with the EU that could have paved the way for the country's future membership. While President Yanukovych's decision handed Russia, which deeply opposes Ukraine's rapprochement with the EU, an immediate victory, the daily marches that have escalated since have revealed widespread support for the EU. |

Man removed from US Airways flight, tuberculosis feared Posted: 02 Dec 2013 12:14 PM PST Officials removed a man with an unspecified infectious disease - possibly tuberculosis - from a US Airways Express flight with 70 passengers on board shortly after it landed in Phoenix over the weekend, authorities said on Monday. The unidentified man was removed from Flight 2846 from Austin, Texas, when it landed on Saturday after the airline received an alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding a passenger known to have an infectious disease, a spokesman for the airline said. The Transport Security Administration had not flagged the passenger as "do not fly" prior to the flight, although once in the air the CDC notified the airline that the passenger had "do not board" status, US Airways spokesman Bill McGlahsen said. A document on the CDC's website said the do not board list is intended "to prevent persons who are contagious from boarding commercial aircraft." It mentioned pulmonary tuberculosis as one such communicable disease. |

Bob Dylan charged in France over Rolling Stone interview Posted: 02 Dec 2013 02:42 PM PST Bob Dylan has been charged with incitement to hatred in France after he was quoted comparing Croats with Nazis in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, a judicial source said Monday. The world-famous American singer was questioned and charged last month while on a visit to Paris during which he gave several concerts and was awarded the Legion d'Honneur, one of France's top honours, the source said. The charge against him centres on a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone magazine during which he compared the relationship between Croats and Serbs to that of the Nazis and the Jews. "This country is just too fucked up about colour.... People at each other's throats just because they are of a different colour," Dylan told Rolling Stone, discussing race relations in the United States. |

Africa risks losing 20 percent of elephants in 10 years Posted: 02 Dec 2013 09:36 AM PST Gaborone (Botswana) (AFP) - Africa could lose 20 percent of its elephant population within a decade, conservation groups warned Monday as governments met in Botswana to discuss measures to curb poaching. An estimated 22,000 elephants were illegally killed across the continent last year, as poaching reached "unacceptably elevated levels," according to a report by CITES, TRAFFIC and IUCN. "If poaching rates are sustained at current levels, Africa is likely to lose a fifth of its elephants in the next ten years," the group said. The study was released as experts and ministers met in Gaborone to look at ways to stamp out the slaughter, fuelled by a growing demand for ivory in Asia. |
