Trump trolls Chelsea Clinton in defense of letting Ivanka take his chair at G-20 Posted: 10 Jul 2017 06:48 AM PDT President Trump defended his daughter Ivanka Trump after she was ridiculed for filling in for him at a G-20 summit meeting in Hamburg, Germany. In her defense the president invoked both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of his former opponent, Hillary Clinton. "When I left Conference Room for short meetings with Japan and other countries, I asked Ivanka to hold seat. |

Iraq and allies violated international law in Mosul battle: Amnesty Posted: 11 Jul 2017 10:49 AM PDT By Stephen Kalin ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Amnesty International said on Tuesday tactics used by Iraqi forces and their U.S.-led coalition allies in the battle for Mosul violated international humanitarian law and might amount to war crimes. The rights group said in a report the Islamic State militant group had also flagrantly violated humanitarian law by deliberately putting civilians in harm's way to shield their fighters and impede the advance of Iraqi and coalition forces. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in Mosul on Monday, three years after Islamic State seized the city and made it the stronghold of a "caliphate" the Sunni Islamist group said would take over the world. |

Indian man tries to open plane's emergency door in midair Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:21 AM PDT An Indian man tried to open an emergency exit door on a packed AirAsia flight in midair, injuring fellow passengers and crew members who rushed to restrain him as the plane prepared to land, the airline said. Following the incident Aftab Ahmed, 32, was detained and handed over to airport security in eastern Ranchi city late Monday. "AirAsia would like to confirm that the airline encountered an unruly passenger onboard (a) flight... from New Delhi to Ranchi on July 10," an airline spokesperson said in a statement. |

This intersection between Mr Kushner's real estate dealings and his father-in-law's international issues highlights the difficulties of an administration besiged with an unprecedented number of conflicts of interest. According to The New York Times, the building has not generated enough to pay its debts in several years, forcing Kushner Companies to cover the multimillion-dollar difference. |

Syrian Observatory says it has 'confirmed information' that Islamic State chief is dead Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:07 AM PDT By Lisa Barrington and Ellen Francis CAIRO/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed. The report came just days after the Iraqi army recaptured the last sectors of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which Baghdadi's forces overran almost exactly three years ago. Russia's Defence Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa. |

Guilty pug has the absolute worst poker face of all time Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:18 AM PDT Definitive fact: all dogs are good dogs — even when they break stuff. It's hard to blame a pet for doing something wrong because they're just so cute and we just love 'em so much. And because they know we'll snuggle them anyway, even though they've done something wrong, some sneaky pets will act as though they had nothing to do with it, knowing they can trick us into thinking that all the pillows just happened to burst open all on their own. SEE ALSO: Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers But Twitter user Kai Johnson's pug, Alfie, couldn't hide his guilt for long. If there was any question about who broke all the glasses on the table, Alfie's face says it all. Who could punish a pup this cute? Even though Alfie clearly had something to do with the mess, Twitter users strongly came to his defense because, once again, sad pug eyes are a human's Kryptonite. Pledging reforms by 2020, Ukraine seeks route into NATO Posted: 10 Jul 2017 07:23 AM PDT By Pavel Polityuk and Natalia Zinets KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine will begin discussions with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on an action plan to get it into the U.S.-led alliance, its leader said on Monday, while the country would work on reforms to meet membership standards by 2020. President Petro Poroshenko, whose country is fighting a Kremlin-backed insurgency in eastern Ukraine, revived the prospect of NATO membership during a visit by NATO Secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg who himself used the occasion to call on Moscow to withdraw its troops from Ukraine. "Ukraine has clearly defined its political future and its future in the sphere of security," Poroshenko speaking to reporters alongside Stoltenberg. |

Is Volkswagen to beat Tesla at its own game? Posted: 10 Jul 2017 09:51 AM PDT By the time Volkswagen begins delivering its first standalone battery-powered electric car in 2020, Tesla expects to be building and selling at least one million units of its own electric vehicles per year. Despite this, Volkswagen believes it's still better placed than Tesla to become the dominant force in the global automotive market when it comes to all-electric vehicles. Herbert Diess, who's in charge of the VW Group's namesake brand, believes that what Volkswagen lacks in first-mover advantage compared to Tesla can be more than made up for by its global scale and its greater manufacturing expertise and experience. |
A year later, injured turtle returns to man who fixed his shell Posted: 10 Jul 2017 03:14 PM PDT A turtle's shell is essential to their protection. A damaged shell makes the creature vulnerable, and can even sometimes be fatal. Luckily, there are heroes that care about the wellbeing of our scaly friends, like this Reddit user's father. SEE ALSO: This adorable baby turtle blob is bringing hope to Southeast Asia On Monday, Daniel Hollenback — who goes by the username Sublimebro — uploaded photos to Reddit of a turtle whose injuries were healed thanks to his father's efforts. The tiny turtle came back a year later looking better than ever. Adorably, the Reddit user's father — presumably the above mentioned Ken — marked a "Ken's Body Shop" on the putty patch. Although Ken's writing didn't survive, the turtle thankfully did, and people made car repair jokes about it. Americans, Briton dead in fight for IS-held Raqa: militia Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:49 AM PDT Two Americans and a Briton have died fighting alongside Syrian Kurdish forces as they battle to oust the Islamic State group from its Raqa stronghold, the forces said Tuesday. The three men volunteering with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) appear to be the first foreign volunteers to have died since fighting began inside the northern Syrian city. In a statement on its website, the YPG said Americans Robert Grodt and Nicholas Warden and Briton Luke Rutter were among six "martyrs" on the Raqa front, without saying where exactly they died. |
Prosecutors argue against prison time for New Jersey 'Bridgegate' mastermind Posted: 11 Jul 2017 02:42 PM PDT By Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - The mastermind of the "Bridgegate" lane closure scandal that helped torpedo New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's presidential bid should not be sentenced to prison due to his cooperation, U.S. prosecutors said in a court document filed on Tuesday. David Wildstein, who helped the government convict two former Christie associates after he pleaded guilty in 2015, is set to be sentenced in federal court in Newark on Wednesday. Wildstein, 55, admitted overseeing a scheme to shut down access lanes at the busy George Washington Bridge in 2013 to create massive traffic gridlock as punishment for a local Democratic mayor who refused to endorse Christie's reelection campaign. |

Can you spot the sneaky leopard hiding in the tree? Posted: 11 Jul 2017 12:29 PM PDT Leopards are experts when it comes to staying hidden, but there was really no need for this big cat to be so shy in front of the camera. German wildlife photographer Ingo Gerlach, who has almost 40 years experience, captured the impressive shot at the Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya. But can you spot the leopard? Your eyes may be immediately drawn to the unlucky impala hanging from the tree branches, but take a closer look and you'll spot the hidden killer. Did you spot the leopard? Credit: Ingo Gerlach / Caters The hungry leopard can be seen climbing up the tree trunk to retrieve its dinner, left high in the branches to stop rivals from stealing its food. "Mostly I'm in Europe and in Kenya. This results in images that are unique. And that is saying something in today's flood of images," Gerlach explains on his website [translated]. Astudy published in the Journal of Animal Ecology in April examined in further detail why leopards hoist their food into trees. "Leopards exhibit a unique form of short-term food caching, regularly hoisting, storing and consuming prey in trees," researchers explained. "Leopards hoisted 51% of kills. They were more likely to hoist kills of an intermediate size ... and in response to the presence of some competitors." They said the prey was most likely to be eaten by hyaenas if left on the ground, using data from 2032 prey items killed by 104 leopards from 2013 to 2015. Gerlach has captured a number of impressive 'spot the animal' photos published in the media. You can see more of his work on Facebook. US looks to defuse Qatar-Gulf row with counter-terror deal Posted: 11 Jul 2017 03:07 PM PDT Qatar and the United States signed a deal Tuesday to combat "terrorism" as visiting US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pursued efforts to resolve the Gulf diplomatic crisis. Grooms marry in same-sex Muslim wedding to show the world you can be gay and Muslim Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:59 AM PDT A couple from the UK have married in traditional Muslim attire in what could be the UK's first same-sex marriage involving a Muslim person. SEE ALSO: Teacher posts inclusive note on door in wake of Trump's America Jahed Choudhury, 24, and Sean Rogan, 19, claim to be the first couple to have a same-sex Muslim marriage. The pair got hitched in Islamic dress at a registry office in Walsall, West Midlands, on 22 June. The couple — who've been together since 2015 — hope other gay Muslims will see their wedding and find the courage to come out to their loved ones. They want to show the world it's possible to be gay and Muslim. "I just hope other gay Muslims see this as well," Choudhury told the Express and Star. "And they know that they've got support from other gay people," Rogan added. Choudhury told the Express and Star he felt like the "black sheep" of his Bangladeshi Muslim family and he'd been repeatedly bullied at school, banned from his mosque, and attacked by other Muslims from his community. "I stood out like a sore thumb – I never liked football, I preferred watching fashion shows on TV. I remember feeling trapped," said Choudhury. "It went all over school, people would spit on me, empty the rubbish bins on me, call me pig and the Muslim people would shout 'haram' — which is a very nasty insult in my language." A post shared by Prince Jahéd and prince sean (@official_jayseanchou) on Jul 4, 2017 at 5:09pm PDT "This is about showing people I don't care, my family doesn't want to come on the day, they just don't want to see it, it's too embarrassing for them," says Choudhury. "I want to say to all people going through the same thing that's it's okay – we're going to show the whole world that you can be gay and Muslim." Same-sex marriages have been taking place in the UK since March 2014 after legislation was passed by parliament in 2013. Congrats to the happy couple!
