Posted: 10 Jan 2018 08:29 AM PST Some wonder if the sudden reversal was nothing more than a stunt to help get Gov. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) elected to the Senate in 2018, while California's top prosecutor pointed out that tourism and beauty are not unique to the Republican-led Sunshine State. "California is also 'unique' & our 'coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.' Our 'local and state voice' is firmly opposed to any and all offshore drilling," California Attorney General Xavier Becerra tweeted, referencing Zinke's own statement. |

California mudslides: Three-year-old girl among dead as names of victims released Posted: 11 Jan 2018 03:33 PM PST Torrential rain sent an avalanche of debris and water surging down a hillside that had been stripped bare by recent wildfires, tearing houses from their foundations and launching a days-long slog to rescue people still trapped in cars and homes. As the search-and-rescue effort unfolded, sheriff's officials declined to publicly release details about the dead — in part an acknowledgement that the toll could mount higher — as they whittled down the number of missing people. All 17 people who perished were from the town of Montecito, and four were children: 10-year-old Jonathan Benitez, 3-year-old Kailly Benitez, 12-year-old Sawyer Corey and 6-year-old Peerawat Sutthithepn all lost their lives. |
Trains resume service in snowbound Swiss ski resort Posted: 10 Jan 2018 09:16 AM PST Trains began running again in the Zermatt ski station on Wednesday after crews dug through mounds of snow blocking the tracks, offering relief to thousands of tourists stranded at the popular Swiss resort. Over the past two days, more than a thousand people have been airlifted out of the resort which lies at the foot of the Matterhorn after heavy snowfall cut off road and rail links. Zermatt's tourism office said trains to the nearby village of Taesch resumed at 5:15 pm (1615 GMT) despite efforts to get the service up and running in the morning. |

Terrifying footage shows the cruise that traveled through the bomb cyclone Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:17 PM PST Nothing like a completely avoidable disaster to totally ruin your expensive cruise. The massive cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway departed New York on Dec. 29, 2017, as it does nearly every week. But this time was different, thanks to the massive bomb cyclone winter storm that rocked the East Coast. SEE ALSO: Norwegian Cruise ship sailed right through 'bomb cyclone' despite accurate forecast Traveling through the storm was completely avoidable, but Norwegian Cruise Line powered on to its original itinerary, heading directly through it. YouTuber RedCurtainEnt was on that journey and managed to compile some of the more exciting moments from the cruise — like flooded hallways, snowy decks, a ton of leaking ceilings, passengers struggling to walk upright, and a whole lotta wind and rough seas. Thankfully, the ship returned to New York on the afternoon of Jan. 5 without major incident, aside from some seriously upset passengers. |

5 Ways to Spice Up Your 401(k) Plan In 1 Day Posted: 10 Jan 2018 09:04 AM PST Despite a robust upswing in the U.S. stock market, American workers continue to struggle with low retirement savings rates. A 2016 study by GoBankingRates states that 56 percent of Americans have less than $10,000 saved for retirement and one-third of U.S. adults have no retirement savings at all. A separate study from Vanguard notes that the average 401(k) fund only holds $101,650 (most investment experts suggest having at least $500,000 saved for retirement), and that 38 million U.S. adults have no retirement account assets at all. |

Surrender or be shot in the face, senior US soldier tells IS Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:51 PM PST US troops and their allies will shoot Islamic State jihadists in the face, beat them to death with shovels or drop bombs on them if they don't surrender, the US military's most senior enlisted member has said. In an eyebrow-raising set of postings on social media Tuesday, Command Sergeant Major John Troxell warned that IS members who refuse to quit will be dispatched with "extreme prejudice," including via a small shovel known as an entrenching tool. "If they surrender, we will safeguard them to their detainee facility cell, provide them chow, a cot and due process," Troxell wrote on Facebook. |

Israel honours its fallen with understated architectural gem Posted: 10 Jan 2018 07:36 PM PST A wide path gently curves underground revealing an undulating cavern, winning praise for both its unassuming architecture and its purpose, as Israel's new national monument to members of its security services killed in the line of duty. At the memorial's entry, a video installation by Israeli artist Michal Rovner juxtaposes groups of soldiers from various periods in the history of Israel's wars, moving and running on one shared landscape before fading away. "Stone, concrete and light are the only materials used here," said Etan Kimmel, the architect who designed the site. |
